The defensive "skills" of the inept GIBBO robots are on display here.

First, instead of making a NORMAL heart lead, East does what the GIBBO robots stupidly LOVE to do: he leads an ENEMY suit, in this case diamonds.

Second, even if he is GOING to lead a diamond (which is stupid to begin with), he would be better off leading the 5 (since they play fourth best) than SQUANDERING the 10 (and giving declarer a ROAD MAP of how to play the diamond suit). Did the clown in the East actually think he was leading from a USEFUL sequence (109 EMPTY fifth!) in an ENEMY suit? It was easy for declarer to cover with the jack, forcing West's queen, which North won with the king...and later lead low to dummy's 8, successfully hooking the 9 - all thanks to the ineffably STUPID lead.

Third: After East wins his club ace, he cashes the spade ace. His partner West follows with what East can see is his LOWEST spade (the 5). Does East therefore shift to a heart? Of COURSE he doesn't, because HE is a...GIBBO robot...and they either don't signal or they IGNORE signals. Consequently, the hopeless "defenders" NEVER got the heart trick to which they were entitled. Why not? Because not only did they FAIL to cash it, but with their spade plays they established a spade trick for declarer to PITCH his losing heart on.

As is so often the case, their "defence" was an unmitigated disaster...possibly because they are clueless at bridge.

The definition of 3H begins with the ridiculous words "Correct back". Had North bid TWO hearts rather than THREE hearts, these words would have been useless, unnecessary, annoying, and insulting just like (sadly!) many (TOO many!) GIB definitions.

Since he actually bid THREE hearts, however, the words are also incorrect, because the bid is not a "correct back" - it is a JUMP PREFERENCE...an invitational bid showing three hearts.

This hand has an unlucky layout for the GIBBO robot DECLARING 3D, so he can't make the hand and has to go down one.

BUT...being a GIBBO robot, the "declarer" found a way to go down TWO.

Playing with GIBBO robots, I often wonder: Does A.I. stand for artificial intelligence or artificial ignorance?

Here's a good example of the bidding "judgment" of the astonishingly clueless GIBBO robots.

Everyone is vul. West deals and opens 1S. North, the "HERO" of this post, has KJ1073, 872, Q7, 1096, and passes. East bids a forcing 1NT. South bids 2H.

West passes. Our "HERO", North, passes. East bids 2S. South passes.

West passes. Our "HERO", North is in the passout seat...but why would this "HERO" ever want to defend with "only" KJ1073 in spades...BEHIND the person who OPENED 1S? Why indeed? ESPECIALLY when he has such a truly MAGNIFICENT hand in support of hearts...at the THREE level.

I.D.I.O.T.!

Regarding post #904 immediately above: You know, for some strange reason, I'm beginning to think the "I" stands for the SECOND possibility, not the first.

GIBBO robot "logic": West can't bid FOUR spades over South's 4H (why NOT?), but when East doubles, West now majestically leaps to SIX spades.

Lead diamonds but don't EVER continue them, GIBBO. Oh no, it would be TERRIBLE to continue a suit...well, at least in the BIZARRO WORLD you seem to live in.

A fellow BBO player sent me the hand linked below and gave me permission to post it. He wrote: "5C not 5D. I make it for 68% but I should have made 6 for 99%."

I am pleased that I was sent this hand because it is an excellent example of how astoundingly bad the GIB definitions and the GIBBO robots are. They both rot!

Due to the 3-3 heart break and the onside king of clubs, both 7NT and 7D are ice cold for North-South, but realistically speaking North-South (not having seen all the cards) would want to be in the excellent contract of 6D, where they would happen to make an overtrick. I think the human's bidding was fine, so if fault is to be laid for not reaching 6D, it is ALL due to the robot. No surprise there!

But the atrocity goes much further than not reaching 6D. Thanks to the total cluelessness of the GIBBO robot in the North, the final contract was (only) at the five level...but in...CLUBS! Let's examine the monumental stupidity that led to this joke of a contract in a 4-2 fit.

Look at the stupid, incorrect GIB definition of South's 4C: "5+ clubs; 4+ diamonds...". With EQUAL length in the minors, with four or more (i.e: 4-4, 5-5, or 6-6), the GIBBO robots always open 1D. (With 3-3 they open 1C.) But with UNEQUAL minor suit length of at least four, they always open the LONGER minor. Thus, on this auction where the human South opened 1D and later bid 4C, he COULD have had EQUAL length in the minors...or he could have had longer DIAMONDS (as in practice he did), but he could NOT have had longer clubs. Thus, when GIB states that South has "5+ clubs" but "only" "4+ diamonds", it is completely WRONG. It would be better to have NO definition than to have an incorrect piece of GRABAGE such as this.

Next we see how completely stupid the GIBBO robots are when North, over South's 4C, bids five...CLUBS! What a complete I.D.I.O.T.! South's has shown either equal length in the minors or longer diamonds than clubs, yet North is contracting for the minor (clubs) that COULD be the shorter one (and in practice IS the shorter one on this random hand). Furthermore, North is making this call - in CLUBS - when he himself has...FOUR (!!!!!) diamonds and ONLY (!!!!!) TWO clubs! I've seen cockroaches with greater intelligence!

And...the M.O.R.O.N.I.C. GIBBO robot isn't even following his own GIB definition, which states: "3+ clubs...". Yet some people STILL say "The GIBBO robots are better than most human players". You know what? I think NOT! This hand offers FURTHER evidence of what I have often said, which is that I have never...ever...seen even a single human player as unutterably incompetent at bridge as the GIBBO robots, and even the WORST human player I ever encountered was better than these incompetent clowns.

To be fair to the GIBBO robot in the North, he IS jammed and in a difficult position, but...3NT??? Gaah!!!! BOTH opponents have bid spades, and the auction shows that they have at LEAST nine spades between them...yet BOZO in the North is bidding 3NT (!!!!!) with his "stopper" of Q5 doubleton!!!

Questionable lead by West immediately creates an otherwise unobtainable diamond winner for South AND sets up a Morton's Fork on West. Neither would actually matter since South has FOUR clubs, but when West ducks the heart, the combination of the free diamond winner and the threat of Morton's Fork allows South to take all 13 tricks.

This is the same hand from post #910 immediately above, but from another table. I am showing it here because it reveals the utter absurdity of something I have long criticized: the absolutely ludicrous 2C system of the GIBBO robots...and in particular the TRULY hopeless way they use a 2NT response to a 2C opener. I have detailed in the past the numerous ways this is blindingly stupid, so I won't give the details again, but you can see for yourselves what an unworkable joke the 2NT response is. Pure GARBAGE.

This thread is about exposing the atrocities of the GIBBO robots. but let's face it: human bridge players also make many mistakes.

But apart from the robots making more mistakes and stupider mistakes, there is a key difference:

When a human makes a mistake, it could be - just like the robots - because he is not good enough to realize the correct bridge bid or play. However, it could also be because he breaks discipline, or because he is tired, feeling unwell, or not paying sufficient attention. None of these are GOOD...but they DO indicate that many of the human's mistakes are caused by NON-bridge factors. A GIBBO robot, however, does NOT ever feel tired, does NOT ever feel unwell, and is ALWAYS paying attention...so the GIBBO robot errors are ALWAYS due to a lack of BRIDGE ABILITY.

I have mentioned a few times that most days I play some "Hearts-Style Challenges" for variety. I play matches of 4 boards in the free "Challenge" section, and on each I bid 7NT at my first opportunity. If doubled, I redouble. Then I try to take as FEW tricks as possible. Down 13 is a perfect result.

These games have no effect on any humans, as I am playing with a robot and against two robots. Absolutely NOTHING is at stake for me or anyone else. It's just for fun.

The GIBBO robots here, as everywhere, are absolutely atrocious. Unbeknownst to them, I am trying to LOSE as many tricks as possible, while they are - as always - trying to WIN as many as possible (although you'd never guess that from their monumentally stupid plays - just like in bridge).

Watch how these flamboyantly ignorant fools play the diamond suit in the first four tricks.

Diamonds are first played at trick two, when I, South, lead my stiff king. West plays a normal 3 from Q63. Trying to LOSE tricks, I call for dummy North's jack from J9742. East wins his ace from A1085. At trick three, he shifts to a low spade, won by West's queen.

At trick four, West's remaining diamonds are the Q6 (and the queen is now high, as the ace and king were both played at trick two). West bizarrely leads the diamond 6. Dummy North has the 9742 remaining. Knowing that the EW "defenders" still have BOTH of the two HIGHEST remaining diamonds (the queen and the 10), I call for dummy North's 9. East, with 1085 remaining, plays his...FIVE!

To be fair, I think that these are not the so-called "advanced" robots, so maybe the so0called (!) "advanced" ones would not be THIS laughingly, HORRENDOUSLY bad...although the so-called "advanced" robots ARE usually horrendously bad anyway!

"Hey, Ben, two questions. First, why did you bid 3NT in response to North's 1C opening? Second, isn't that a ridiculous bid?"

"I'll answer your second question first: Yes, of course it's a ridiculous bid. Now, for your first question: Did you SEE who my 'partner' was? Did you SEE who my opponents were? Did you SEE how they 'defended' after that auction? Playing in BIZARRO WORLD it's sometimes fun to roll the dice!"

And now, let's LOOK at their "defence":

East wins his partner's heart lead with the ace. At trick two he plays a...HEART. Well done, Mr. East! You GIBBO robots usually HATE to return partner's suit, but here you actually DID it! I'm impressed...or, that is, I WOULD have been impressed had you returned the CORRECT heart, but since you're a hopeless GIBBO robot, I guess that was too difficult for you, so you STUPIDLY returned your THREE of hearts instead of CORRECTLY returning your two. As Kitty Kallen once sang, "little things mean a lot" and your STUPID play of the three might well have been what caused your "partner" West to get pseudo-squeezed and throw away his spade king at trick 12, thereby allowing me to take an "impossible" TWO spade tricks with NO spade losers.

Several things here that expose the incomparable stupidity of the GIBBO robots:

East - in third seat, white against red, passes...when virtually ALL actual bridge players (!) would open 1H.

Later, after East makes a takeout double showing the reds and South bids 2C, West...LEAPS to THREE diamonds. Why is he jumping when his partner is a PASSED hand? But worse, much worse, is why is he bidding DIAMONDS rather than hearts? His partner East showed both red suits. West has four cards in each, but his HEARTS are way better in quality, with KQJ7 there but a far weaker 8432 in diamonds. Furthermore, if his side buys the contract and makes it, hearts will score better than diamonds. And finally, if it should come to pass that he wants to bid again later in a competitive auction, he will be unable to show his hearts without REVERSING, whereas if he had bid hearts first, he could later COMFORTABLY also show his diamonds if he wanted to. Thus, by THREE different criteria, his choice of bidding diamonds rather than hearts was...wrong, wrong, and WRONG! What a hopeless reject!

Then we witness a truly pitiful "defence" by these same *****s.

West pops his spade king at trick five. He has two reasons for doing so. One is stupidity. The other is cowardice. But what he does next is even worse: For no discernible reason, he plays a heart. This allows declarer to later LEGITIMATELY squeeze East, who cannot hold on to THREE essential cards (ace of spades and Q5 of diamonds) in the TWO-card ending, so declarer makes ELEVEN tricks on the hand despite being off THREE top tricks (ace of hearts and ace-king of spades.

It NEVER surprises me to see mind-blowing incompetence from the execrable GIBBO robots, because I always EXPECT it from them.

At trick five I give my "partner" North a heart ruff. In so doing, I return my SEVEN of hearts from 743. My "partner" KNOWS these are my remaining hearts and he SEES that I am returning my HIGHEST remaining one. Why would I do that? OBVIOUSLY it was a suit preference signal for my "partner" to return the HIGHER of the two other suits, in other words to return a SPADE rather than a club. So what does the M.O.R.O.N. do? Well, he's a braindead GIBBO robot (aren't they ALL?) so of COURSE the inept fool returns a CLUB. Imbecile! So: Either they don't PLAY suit preference signals (which would be stupid) or they IGNORE them (which would be stupid) or they overrule their partner (which would be stupid AND disrespectful). Any way you slice it, the inescapable conclusion is that the GIBBO robots absolutely ROT!

4D is a BAD bid by the clueless GIBBO robot in the North. Yeah, I know: What ELSE is new?

His hand is WAY too good for his splinter, which jams the auction, wastes valuable bidding space, and will very likely result in his partner bidding 4H, since the 4D splinter has left NO room to do anything else without going BEYOND game.

6H is ice cold on THIS random hand. Will it ALWAYS be cold on ALL random hands? No, of course not, but when slam IS good, NS will have a chance to find it if North bids THREE diamonds rather than his stupid 4D. And if slam is NOT good, NS will KNOW to stop in game. They will NEVER miss a game anyway, but they MIGHT get to a cold slam - sometimes even a cold grand - if North is an actual BRIDGE PLAYER and not a contemptible GIBBO robot!

Why is East REBIDDING his FOUR-card heart suit? Answer: Because he's a GIBBO robot, so he - like ALL his fellow GIBBO robots - has no IDEA how to bid.

East is desperate - DESPERATE, I tell you - for diamond ruffs (because he "only" has J109532 of trumps! - imbecile) - so he leads his stiff diamond queen (which he KNOWS is declarer's second suit at least four cards long) INTO declarer. Brilliant, Mr. East, absolutely brilliant - NOT!

Declarer scores 100 % for going down "only" one. EW garner yet ANOTHER pure ZERO for their universally admired mammoth, UNTOUCHABLE collection of lifelong ZEROES. If a movie is ever made about these strikingly inept clowns, a good title would be "Zeroes for Zeroes".

North makes the REMARKABLY stupid lead of the king of spades, declarer's known FIRST suit, INTO declarer.

But that's not even CLOSE to being the stupidest thing this ignorant GIBBO LOSER does on the hand, because at trick four declarer leads the 5 of spades towards dummy's now stiff 9. North KNOWS that if he ducks, dummy's 9 will WIN (if South does not ruff it) because South had perforce overtaken North's imbecilic spade king lead at trick one with his STIFF ace.

North STUPIDLY plays his spade 2, so dummy's 9 FORCES South to overruff with his LONG trumps. South did NOT want to WASTE a trump and South would not have NEEDED to waste a trump if he had not been "partnered" by one of the worst "bridge players" in the universe, namely a GIBBO robot.

And, by the way, why were EW even IN 2H? Answer: Because the GIBBO robot sitting West overcalled South's opening 1D bid with 1S (fine)...but then after North and East passed and South reopened with a double, West...bid... TWO HEARTS (!)...on his AK2 tripleton!

What PLANET are these GIBBO monstrosities on? Oh, sorry: stupid question. They're OBVIOUSLY on the planet called BIZARRO WORLD!
