We use Journalist leads against NT, ands so the opening lead gives attitude regarding the suit led. My partner and I have never used Smith Echo, but is it redundant or useful where using Journalist ? I would appreciate anyone providing thoughts.

It is not redundant for two reasons.

1. Responder can use Smith Echo, as his attitude in the suit might not be apparent from the play to trick one.

2. One's opinion about the suit might have changed after the play to trick one. For example, opener makes a low (I like the suit) lead from a reasonable 5 card suit. But the play to trick one and/or the appearance of the dummy shows him that it is not useful to continue attacking that suit. So he uses Smith Echo to discourage a continuation.

You can also use Smith Echo to show count in the suit if you think that this is more useful.
