Hi, I'd like to learn how to play bridge. I've never played, but have long wondered about the game. Can anyone point me to online tutorials, or any other resources that might help me get started?
Many thanks!

rpbridge starts with bidding and then proceeds to play. You need to do it the other way.
There is not much point in teaching beginners to bid 3NT with 27 HCPs and avoid it with 22 HCP as long as it will be fairly random whether it makes or not in both cases.
Learn mini bridge (i.e. play only, no bidding) first. Depending on how devoted and how fast-learning you are, and depending on your teacher's approach, it may take from two weeks to half a year before you proceed to bidding.

"Gibberish in, gibberish out. A trial judge, three sets of lawyers, and now three appellate judges cannot agree on what this law means. And we ask police officers, prosecutors, defense lawyers, and citizens to enforce or abide by it? The legislature continues to write unreadable statutes. Gibberish should not be enforced as law."

If you're in the UK, a good introduction can be found at http://bridge.uwcs.co.uk/?m=w, (the "quick start bridge" at the bottom)

I would recommend very, very strongly the one by ACBL. It explains things in JUST the right order. The person who wrote it understood what is happening in the minds of the beginners reading it. Plus, it has play problems embedded inside it, which help illustrate what it is teaching as it goes along. Learning by doing is best! It is usually impossible to learn by doing from books, so it really is a perfect tutorial.
Also what I like is that it teaches the play FIRST rather than the bidding, and bidding seems very abstract and incomprehensible to beginners if they don't know what the play is about first. Yet most beginner's books talk about the bidding first.
So anyway, download the ACBL 'Learn To Play Bridge' program as fast as possible :-)

And if your learning bridge in rhyme, you're guaranteed to have a good time.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

Hopefully you're still around. I have a wiki page of resources for the beginner, most are free or low cost. Since it is a wiki page, it can be edited by other people if they want.
DeepGames.info - Bridge study guide
I recommend the free videos, Learn to Play Bridge I & II, and Blue Chip MiniBridge

I have that on my list. It looks really good, but after a while I realized it's overly focused on bidding. It's definitely the best web page bridge course. I like Learn to Play Bridge I &II as a software course much, much better. And if you have money for a book, I think Beginning Bridge Complete is better than that website.
