pass-pass-pass(me)-1 diamond
pass-1heart-pass(me)-1spade
pass-pass-1nt(me)- 2nt
It was matchpoints, when I heard 1 diamond then 1 spade about to be passed out, i closed my eyes and bid 1nt.
I figured opener must be a rule of 20 fan and is trying to steal a few matchpoints.
I was stunned by the players 2nt bid, and was even more stunned that he took ten tricks.
Oh boy, what did i just do?, did i just get a zero?
Later I saw that my result was actually 96.88%.
This was in fact opener`s hand:
his partner had a healthy kq 5th in hearts, 9 hcp, and only 3 tables out 33 did not bid some kind of game.
Surely opener remebered one of the tales which prevent people from opening 1nt:
1) one cannot have a 5 card suit( not even a minor)
2) one cannot have a doubleton, much less 2 doubletons
3) all suits must be stopped
there are many more out there. and they can make a grown man cry.
