Guilty.

The hand obviously doesn't resemble a weak jump at all, so the only choices are Pass or 1♥. With a nice 6-4, I am afraid I will overcall 1♥ here. :(
That's impossible. No one can give more than one hundred percent. By definition that is the most anyone can give.

Move my AJ into hearts and I would overcall.

1♥ is not very preemptive, and I don't want a heart lead.

Well, often these 'Would you overcall' threads are WTP bids, where passing is just bad.

This hand is different - I can't say that passing is wrong - we do after all only have 5HCP. Even so I would definitely bid, but I can't claim that bidding is obvious or clearly correct. There are very real downsides. But it is often a good thing to get into an auction, the hand has playing strength, so...

I prefer 2 hearts to one heart, and at this vulnerability I will do neither. I want partner to trust that I either have close to an opening hand or a suit I want led when overcalling at the 1 level; this hand does not fit.

We should always assume 2/1 unless otherwise stated, because:

- If the original poster didn't bother to state his system, that means that he thinks it's obvious what he's playing. The only people who think this are 2/1 players.

What ARE my choices? May I Rapter 1NT and rebid 2H (some appeal as shows weak distributional)? May I wjo 2H without top H --is this expectable in this partnership(that has appeal)?

My partnership severely restricts 1H, but 2H is free-wheeling so this works.

I still think that bidding 1 Heart from this garbage to lets say Kxx,AKQxx,xx,AJx makes it impossible for pd to judge the later bidding if the opponents bid quick and high.
But I must admit that f.e. Wladow-Elinescu play this way with remarkable success.

1♥ is ridiculous: you don't have strength, you don't have suit quality. The only thing you have is distribution, but that alone doesn't get you anywhere.

Han,

You are seriously going overboard with these 1 level overcalls. I think you are taking a good idea (overcall at the 1 level with weakish distributional hands) way too far. Here you are vul against not and there just isn't much merit to bidding. If you have a game you will almost always get in anyways, you don't want the lead, it's very unlikely you want to save, it's risky that partner will bid too much in a competitive auction and go for a number vulnerable, etc etc. There is just very little merit to bidding at these colors with this hand. I would ask you what you are trying to achieve. As far as 2H, if you aren't english or dutch or under 20 years old I think it wouldn't occur to you. Oh wait...

I'm an American bridge player and well over 20. Besides, who said I overcalled 1H or even had this hand? It's the hogs and gnashers and 653321's that you should be lecturing Roger!

Alright, you guessed it, I did overcall 1H. The auction was:

1C - 1H - 1S - 2S
3S - p - p - 4H
p - p - 4S - all pass.

4S is down one (should have been down 2 the way declarer played it) and 4H would also have been down 1. Partner had KJx KJxx KQJ10 Qx.

I'm not sure why partner didn't double, he has a 16-count and I made a red vs white overcall!

If you read my post as suggesting that it was the 1H call that lead to a great result, and therefore 1H is a good bid then, you misunderstood my intentions. Often people like to know what happened at the table.
