In an ACBL game, you are dealt a perfectly normal weak 2: QTx xxx KQxxxx x and its w/w at matchpoints.

LHO overcalls 3 and pard makes a penalty double.

I posted this because my opponent made a pretty strange bid that paid off. Can you guess what it is?

By the way, I disregarded Pass, since that is the obvious bid.

I'll guess 3 because 3NT doesn't seem sufficiently weird.

3?

Looking for and finding a 4-4 major suit fit, no doubt...maybe even a 5-4?

Not sure if that qualifies as weird... actually, I can't really think of a plausible call that is automatically weird, other than silly ones like a splinter, 5, keycard, etc.

3Major is obviously possible.. so is 4 major... 3N is possible based on long, strong hearts and the diamond Ace and so on. I suspect the weirdness is not so much in the bid as it is in the hand with which the bid was made.

This presupposes he is playing or thinking that 3 as a takeout promising some major suit hand.

I further suppose it didn't get alerted.

3 is the call that was made.

I hope you all got what I was trying to accomplish by asking the "strange bid possible'

Of course his partner hit with AKJxx AKx xx xxx. They scored up a nice 170. Pard was wrapping 3.

I felt totally railroaded.

Well, if 3 wasn't alerted, you should get some adjustment for it.

just to clear things up, the auction read:

2(^) - 3 - X(*) - P;
3 - all pass

^ - weak, diamonds
* - penalties

preemptor held: ♠QTx ♥xxx ♦KQxxxx ♣x

Well that wasn't clear (to me). I thought you held the 2D opener, and your RHO bid something over the X. So my vote is meaningless.

A fairly strange bid that might pay off is 4 -- pick a major.

I'm confused. From the opening post (and Phil's later post), I thought the auction was:

2-3-DBL-3

Oh yeah. I was confused too.

I think the auction is:

2-3-X-?

Then the question is "what bid by Advancer?"

I have no guesses.

The pronouns in the OP are a bit confusing. I think it means what do you do holding this hand (the weak 2 hand) after partner has made a penalty double of 3, because when his opponent held that hand, he didn't pass the penalty double. I don't think Phil was the one holding the weak 2 hand.

I looked up the hand on myhands, and the auction was as I had understood it from phil's post (and as I had posted). 2D was announced as weak and the X was alerted as penalties.

the weak 2 bidder responded with 3 on QTx to their p's penalty double.

Now I know why I have problems reading other peoples' posts :rolleyes:

It was my LHO that held the weak 2 and pulled the 'penalty' double to 3. What a catch he received.
