If you "have to rebid 2NT to invite with or without four spades" then there are three approaches:
ETM victory handles this with an interesting twist, well worth considering...
1NT - 2D <--- jacoby, can be any of the normal jacoby hands EXCEPT for major two suiter. Can not use this with spades and hearts. However, this tranfer does not promise a five card heart suit.In fact, it can be a four card or even shorter heart suit. If short, then it is a game invite hand of the sort that goes in standard american 1N-2N.... but here it may include four hearts.
Opener bids 2♥ with any hand that lacks 4 or more hearts. He bids above 2♥ to show four or five hearts (different bids show different numbers) and minimum or maximum. Thus, 1NT-2D-?
- 2♠Opener has 5♥ minimum
- 2NT opener has 4♥ minimum
- 3♣ Opener has 5 hearts maximum
- 3♥ Opener has 4♥ maximum (3♥ instead of 3♦, responder can bid 3♦ on ohter auctions as retransfer to ♥s.
Over 2♥ completion of transfer, responder rebids 2♠ to show five hearts and game invite (or GF with clubs and five plus hearts), or rebids 2NT to show game invite with 4 or less hearts.
There is a lot more there of course, but just thought I would share this innovation with you.
