I am just curious how many of you have it switched on all the time, or now you have tried it, is it switched off?

How has no one mentioned that the voice is the same as Stephen Hawking's?

it is, it is!! that's ok tho, as long as he doesn't start discussing imaginary numbers

I have turned it off. I would turn it on for broadcasts if I could filter club and tournament messages.
Club messages for pay tournaments are becoming annoying and it seems the only way to avoid them is to cancel your membership to the club.

Given the option I would turn OFF club/tournament broadcasts and turn ON broadcasts for tournament subs. Tournament sub messages are lost when you turn off lobby noise B)

You can change the gender and speed of the voice in Windows XP under Control Panel -> Speech -> Text to Speech.

I care about the friends I have made on BBO. Also, I am extremely concerned about the environment/ ecology/ wildlife/ the little planet that we call Earth. How much more of the world's habitat and food supply for animals do we plan on destroying. How many more wetlands are we going to drain, fill, and build on? How many more sand dunes are we going to knock down in the interests of high-rise hotels or luxury homes?

The ones available on my machine are:

LH Michael;
LH Michelle; and
Microsoft Sam.

I'm using Windows XP Professional will all the recent updates and service packs.

If you do a google search, I think you can load all sort of different voices onto your machine, including voices without an Amercian accent.

"Microsoft Sam" is the only option on this PC? Can you download other voices?

Is it just me or has the new 'lady' who has been 'adopted' by BBO got a rather severe lisp?

Was playing the other day and she said :-

'four of thpadth'....
'thixth of diamondth'?

I found it difficult to understand and as the poor girl had unfortunately spluttered so much whilst talking i had to wipe the monitor as it was splashed around the bottom corners (in-built speakers).

I felt so sorry for her i deliberately played cards that did not have an s syllable in them...i was very aware, with my strong sense of empathy, that she was very self-conscious of her speech impediment.

My only concern is that if people, as they might, will use BBO as a tool to improve their English as well as their bridge, they may start talking themselves with an exaggerated thtweth on all the 'S's. The side-effect of this, of course, is that having a lisp might start having a social cachet.

Just voicing my contherns.

I sincerely believe the voice should be changed to that of HAL from: 2001: A Space Odessey:

"Now, Dave, do you really want to lead the five of spades?"

If you try to revoke: "I'm sorry Dave, I can't do that."

Slothy, did you apply to be an Igor?

The thought of voice was so daunting that I didn't even update to this version, nor any subsequent version, and I will not unless I am assured that voice can be completely and fully disabled.

The default is that voice is turned off completely.

i'm pretty sure that the voice stuff is completely off by default - but if it's not, it's very easy to disable. :)

edit: you're quick, fred. :)

Voice is GREAT!

I use it in the viewgraph to speak the bids - that way I can tell when a new hand is under way.

The ACBL announcements are bizarre when spoken aloud, and I am a member. I can only imagine what non-US players think of them. Can we prevail on the BBO ACBL reps to change things so they sound reasonable? "Diamond diamond club diamond diamond sign up now ... hyphen hyphen hyphen greater than ACBL" doesn't make it.
