I don't see this one that hard really, it only requires responder to know that 5 is an option, then he will

suggest spades with 1
suggest hearts with 2 showing values on the way
suggest clubs with 3
and finally over 3NT he can either pass or suggest slam in NT with 4NT. Even suggesting clubs again with 4 works as partner will quickly reject more loudly with 4NT.

Bidding 3 instead of 3 doesnt't make any sense. 3 is even non forcing for me (5-5 invitational), but assuming it was it is missdescribing and more space consuming.

I also think that those who condemn anybody for opening this hand 1 are ... STOP. Helene is still right.

Rik, who condemned anybody for opening 1C? My post stated " he would certainly open with 1D to avoid a rebid problem". This is my opinion. If others want to open 1C om 4/5 ms, that is their problem, not mine. I continue to hope that they do it.

FWIW, I posted this hand as a poll on Bridgewinner's yesterday.

The thread is available at http://bridgewinners...cj=82460#c82460

Few quick observations.

70% of the respondents stated that they preferred to pass rather than make any kind of opening. (This was without including a statement that the pair plays a conservative opening style which I believe was mentioned at some point during the thread)

Of the 30% of the players who chose to open, a 1NT opening edges out 1D

7 out of 16 players chose to open 1N
6 out of 16 chose to open 1C and rebid 2C
3 out of 16 chose to open 1D and rebid 2C

Well Pass is obvious unless playing LOBs, isn't it Richard? I lol at those who think this is an opening in a standard system.

This brings back memories.

Firstly this post was made today after you posted your initial response. Are you prescient? Secondly how is lol condeming. Look up the dictionary definition. I do find those who open this hand worthy of mirth, not condemnation. You will note that i said i hope that they continue to do so.
