Playing upside-down count and attitude, which card would you play at trick one in the following situations? (Please ignore the overbidding. I'm more concerned about what signal to give and what it should mean to produce the best defense.)

1. Matchpoints.

Partner leads A♠? Partner leads K♠?

2. Matchpoints.

Partner leads A♠? Partner leads K♠?

1. Hand On the Ace: I would like partner to switch because I would like a switch to a minor and he will surely find one.
After the king: I have to give a count signal, the 3. If this is att. situation for you, I would still discourage.

2. Hand.I would always signal positive or give the right count.

A positive signal does not say: Hey, I have high honours in this suit, underlead your honours. It just says: Please do continue the suit.
Kind Regards

Roland

UDCA always confuses me ... so I just do the OPPOSITE of standard .

Hand 1: Ace lead ( asking Attitude )..Standard, I would play HI ( start of hi-lo ) .. so with UDCA, I'd play LO first ( the 3 ).
......... [ With the King lead ( asking Count ) ... Standard would play HI ... so UDCA....play LO ].

Hand 2: Also, play LO in both cases .

I had a pard that when I led the K and dummy had QJT would always signal "I don't like them" Duh!

Switched to Ace, attitude King, count (at least you know what you're getting) and found a pard that could work out suit preference based on the auction and the dummies holding. ie. Ace lead when declarer has bid 2 other suits and dummy has KQx

I don't have a profitable switch to offer and play low in all your examples.

#1: Depends on your agreements, but some people play that ♠A denies the K (with the lead of the K asking for the count). Regardless, I would play low in both cases; in the former case there's no attractive switch and in the latter, we are just giving count.

#2: Likewise for similar reasons, except that at the 4-level, A might merely show AK.

What is all this talk about Suit Preference ?

OP asked about your card at trick ONE .

There is no "obvious shift" at work here .

OS is played at trick ONE.

Playing OS, if you discourage the lead, it means you can stand the obvious switch (clubs in case one according to the Granovetter rules). Since we can't, encouraging is advisable playing OS.

I have been playing UDCA signals for about 40 years. All I can say in answer to your questions is "What do you want partner to play at trick two?"

If you want him to continue the suit, then encourage. If not, discourage. This has nothing to do with UDCA, it has to do with bridge. Same thing with Obvious Shift situations.

The issues as to method come up when your method requires you to play a card that you can't afford to play. Such as an honor from a doubleton. This is where UDCA can often gain a trick.

Small, twice.

The first one I would encourage because I don't want partner to switch (if he switches to ♣ from Qxx you hand them the contract), and I'm not planning on overruffing if dummy ruffs a 3rd ♠ btw.

The second one is a very easy encouraging imo: you have small trumps, and that's really ALL I have. Partner has his own set of brains, if he thinks it's necessary to play ♦ asap he can figure it out.
