Zel, if this has any resemblance to your previous posts on hands from your local club, I sit in fear to find out what you actually did at the table. I will wait patiently until you post the full hand with the actual bidding.

If this was at the club, you probably bid 5♠

I actually doubled, intending to bid 5♥ over 5♦. What actually happened is that partner passed 5♣X (with ♠T6 / ♥KT75 / ♦98763 / ♣54) and we failed to orchestrate a diamond ruff, scoring -750 and 2/16 MPs. My double came in for a fair degree of criticism so I decided to poll for a second opinion.

I hate double. 5♥ with this hand I guess, make it a bit stronger and I'd risk 6♣. I am not willing to risk partner passing or bidding 6♦.
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

IMO Double (clutching the appropriate finger of your left hand) = 10, 5♥ = 8, 5N = 5, 5♠ = 4, 6♣ = 3.

let me guess, if you X, partner with Kxxx, Kxx, xxxx, xx passes and it makes with you making 5♥ on a club lead .

Pass of the x is appalling. 5H would also be very poor. Get a new partner.

I think X is right, but partner will pass it on a lot of hands where it's right to bid.

I can see partner's point, you might have been dealt AKQx, QJxx, KQJx, x or similar where 5♣ is going down and you're not making anything at the 5 level.

I am quite happy with my partner, thank you. We are not pretending to be experts and I certainly make worse calls every session. You must go through many partners if you are so critical of their 5 level decisions even when they reach the (DD) par contract.

I think double is poor. Well actually i think if you double then bid 5♥ with this hand in your methods then your methods are poor. We need double and bid to show stronger hands.

Its 5♥ or nothing and its not nothing.
