I actually doubled, intending to bid 5♥ over 5♦. What actually happened is that partner passed 5♣X (with ♠T6 / ♥KT75 / ♦98763 / ♣54) and we failed to orchestrate a diamond ruff, scoring -750 and 2/16 MPs. My double came in for a fair degree of criticism so I decided to poll for a second opinion.

I think X is right, but partner will pass it on a lot of hands where it's right to bid.
I can see partner's point, you might have been dealt AKQx, QJxx, KQJx, x or similar where 5♣ is going down and you're not making anything at the 5 level.

I am quite happy with my partner, thank you. We are not pretending to be experts and I certainly make worse calls every session. You must go through many partners if you are so critical of their 5 level decisions even when they reach the (DD) par contract.
