BAM

VUL vs. NV

VOID=9XX=A9XXX=AQ9XX

1) RHO bids 1s, your bid and why?
2) RHO bids 12-14 nt, your bid and why?

Same at MP or IMP?

Over 1N you have an easy bid to show a 2 suiter - any form of scoring.

Over 1S 2N looks right

At board a match, first I have protection assuming I am playing with people of most outstanding skill as partners at the other table. So with an EYE on us being vulnerable and the opponents not being vulnerable, here is what I bid.

1) Over 1 - I pass or second choice double. I do not consider 2NT. For one thing, 2NT will tell them how to play the hand if it belongs to them, and at this vul, we are not outbidding them unless they stop in 2 spades, in which chance I will get another chance to bid. Second reason against 2NT, is my hand does have three hearts. It would be a shame to play in a 5-2 or 5-3 minor fit at BAM with a 5-3 or 6-3 heart fit and teh hand with a short spade (me) also having the short heart. So 2NT is a horrible bid at this form of scoring. I like double in theory with support for the other three suits, but at BAM, 3 down one or two with rhree or four of a minor making would not be so good either. Thus double seems about right to me.

2) Over 1NT - partner may be hard pressed to balance and if he does, it might be in spades. True if he bids 2, I can offer minor as an escape with 2NT, but I think I would start with 2 which shows clubs and another suit. (2NT is also possible for minors, but is even more counter-indicated over 1NT than it would be at this vul at BAM).

How would I bid at regular imps and MP? At regular imps, I will go ahead pass over 1 and bid 2 over 1NT for the same reason, but I will bid 2NT over 1 and over 1NT at MP (no field protection).

Over 1, I'm bidding 2. This hand is too strong for a "bad" 2NT and nowhere near strong enough for a "good" 2NT

Over 1N, I make the appropriate bid to show a two suiter with the minors

1. 1N (takeout)
2. 2N - a little nervously; might be walking into a big number.

At BAM a big number makes no difference. It is frequency that count. -200 verus they can make 170 on lucky break in spades, or even -140 at imps is ok. At BAM it is a disaster. AT this vul, I think you have to tread very carrefully. I would wait to see where they land. If they stop in 2, i would then compete. If they push on, hope the spade void is a nasty surprise for them. I would also use 2NT to try to scramble out of 2 should partner balance there.

The overcall structure 1NT works ok here, but may get you to 2 in a 4-3 when you belong in a minor. You pay your money with that biddign tool, and you take your chances. The same reason why I would not double 1, I would not bid 1NT..but of course, passing playing overcall structure (pass should be alerted), carries all kinds of additional meanings that this hand lacks. Still, I would pass, and then if I balance back later with 2NT partner will know why I didn't bid 2NT to begin with.

my bid over #1 would depend on who my partner is... if i'm playing with someone whose judgement i'm not quite sure of, i probably double and feel fine playing in a 4/3 heart fit (if it comes to that)... if my partner is phil, as one example from among many fine players, then i bid 2nt and trust him to judge how high to go in my suits...

on #2 it's different, i bid whatever shows the minors

1) its tough, 2 is out of question, a bit weak for double, not good suit for 2 and too strong for 2NT, I will devaluate it a bit and bid 2NT anyway.

2) 2NT, what else?
