Different directors have different ideas about how to run their game... one thing that gets many (most?) angry is repeatedly pressing the "call button". In theory they will get to you as soon as possible. One good appoach is to press it once, and if you still need them and afraid you got lost in the mix, send them a private message, include TABLE NUMBER and the why you call....

Many calls on the director button slows them down if they are having a lot of problems, the private messages do not...

Yes player2 and player3 appear to be directors... I changed the names....

Todays Hobsons Choice was very hectic due to the many bad connections, disconnections and players who left the table after a bad result. The 2 TD's got an abnormal number of calls. One round needed 2 extra minutes because of too many unfinished tables. We try to avoid that, but sometimes it is inevitable.
Every TD-call is obstructing the typing of the names of players in the substitutionpart because first the pointer has to be set again in het namefield.
Today I got several calls at the same moment. I like to finish a substitution before I go to one of the tables.
That was made impossible by SirSatai. I don’t know exactly how often, but he/she called at least 12-15 times in a very short while. I finished subbing and went to his/her table and intended to ask him/her to stop calling TD at this stupid way.
Because he/she is a TD he/she should have some understanding for the problems TD’s have in hectic times. Just before the subbing I chatted to tournament:
jw_nl->Tournament: please be patient lots of calls we have to sub a lot of players.

On the table:
SirSatai: PL-1
SirSatai: did not bid
PL-1: sry (got reconnected at that moment)
SirSatai: until this time
PL-2: ok he came back....ty
SirSatai: if possible i want time adjusment


I was very angry and said to him in priv.call:

SirSatai: you can not you have to BL him
SirSatai: and i will call you when i need


AND I WILL CALL YOU WHEN I NEED and if a TD doesn’t come immediately after the first call he/she clicks continuously on the Call TD button

He/she is not belonging to the kind of players I like to have in HC.
I asked host aramesh_ to blacklist him/her for HC.

That should be a good way to get banned.

I wouldn't mind a bit if the software automatically tournament banned somebody who called the director four times in five minutes.

In fact, I'm rather in favor of it. There's good reason why somebody may be forced to leave numerous tournaments (if he/she subs on a regular basis, is an on-call paramedic or doctor, lives in a poor country where blackouts are common, etc.). There's never a good reason to repeatedly call the director. It's rude, it's obnoxious, and it disrupts the game. The TD can always add time if he gets behind, so wait your turn.

I have hosted Hobson's Choice 141 times as on 11/12/2004 along with my friends, helping me.
We have never played in our tournament because we feel the role of a TD is to see that the tournament runs properly, make adjustments if a board is unfinished and provide subs when a player is frozen or gets disconnected.
But I find, of late, there are many tournaments where the TDs say :- no adjustments under any circumstances, find your own substitutes, playing TD/TDs so cannot come to the table, etc. Fine, it's their way of running trnies and I dont complain.
But, such TDs, when they play in some other tournament, expect the TD to keep waiting for their call and appear at their table the moment they hit the call TD button. If not they make multiple calls. What they will not do in their tournaments, they expect from the TD of the tournament they play in.
The Rules OF HC are clear. I have said that there shall be no multiple calls from the same table. If only the players will hit the button for Rules specific to the event before registering just once they will they will know what to expect. If they dont like my rules, let them not play.
I have named my tournament "Hobson's Choice" which means according to the Oxford Dictionary, the choice of taking the thing offered or nothing. So the choice is the players'.
Only players who are prepared to play following the rules we have set are most welcome. HC is not for those who will not.

You know, this would be a lot easier if we had a better call-TD mechanism. Like maybe this:

--Once someone at the table hits the Director button, the button changes colour for all four players and when anyone else hits it, they get a canned message like "The Director has already been called by Sec_Bird. This call is on the TDs list and a TD will arrive as soon as possible." (Of course, Sec_Bird is a fictional name...)

--TDs have three ways to attend to calls:
1) Tables where the TD has been called are displayed in a different colour, or perhaps blink, slowly at first, then quicker as more time goes by
2) A button on the TDs screen takes him to the next Director call in the list.
3) Another button on the TDs screen lists the calls in order, including the name of the caller, the reason entered by the caller, and buttons to "go to this call" which takes the TD to that table, and "ignore this call" which sends the players a message that their call has been discarded by the TD. It would be even better to keep the list active, with all calls listed as "pending," "resolved," or "ignored." It would be easy to see which players call far too often and penalize them somehow.

you obviussly have big problems behaving in turneys, as you know u are blacklisted from my turneys too couse of rude behaveure.

Agree 100%.

Players waiting for the TD to come to their table cannot imagine, how much stress the TD-calls make, especially because they popup in the forground and break down whatever you are just doing (subbing; adjusting).

I cant quote the exsakt situajon here ,(nor do i whish too) and i dont record chat and this happen a few monds ago. so i dont know where to find it if i even recored some of my chat. but i remmember the incident very clearly and i can remind you why you are blacklisted from my tourneys any time if you have forgotten:))

Any improvement to the way Director Calls operate will be oh so welcome .

I have found it almost impossible to make people understand what happens.

They just cannot seem to grasp that once they hit the director button I get their message BUT before I can finish dealing with whatever it was I was already dealing with - I have to clear their message and when I do that I have to start all over again on whatever it was I was doing - argggghhhhh



I love a challenge but this is hair tearing stuff, especially when cyber space is shaky and there are a lot of 'hiccups' [edited:uday] A week or two back I just threw in the towel and cancelled - nearly had to put in a call for the 'men in white coats'.

It would ne nice if:
1. A director call from a table disables the director button until the Director has cleared the initial call
2. Director calls do not interfere with what the TD's are doing but stay on screen
3. Director calls stack up like Leave Mail Messages - you have to clear them in order of receipt. It would be even nicer if the message to TD had a reply 'pad' so a message went back to the table for all at the table to see - then I could say "No" to going to the table but quickly let them know that their message is on my to do list ( something like "will do" - "coming' - "will adjust later" " - " you are caller # 13 !!" - "will fix it next year !")

MY inexperienced suggestion (and I'm not sure IF it could be implemented) maybe if ONE player at a table called the TD a message to table appeared "director called by player xyz " together with Maureen's suggestion that "call director" button being disabled from that table UNTIL TD comes -- and maybe also a second message to table "you are caller number X" which would address Maureen's 3rd point
