Why is 1NT-5NT undefined? Supposedly, 7NT shows 21+ HCP, but I don't always want to be in 7NT on a combined 36... (as a practical matter I bid Gerber, but I still don't necessarily want to be in 7NT on all combined 36 HCPs with 4 aces.)

What is supposed to be 1NT - 5NT ? Grand-slam invite based on what?

1NT with 17HCP bids 7NT as counts combined with 5NT 21+HCP to guarantee there is maximum a queen missing?

Isn't better 4 - Gerber, then 5 - Query Kings - you will get same result much saner.

So likely 17HCP wouldn't be a problem to bid a grand.

In standard bidding, after a natural NT bid, 4NT is quantitative invite to 6NT (partner either passes or bid 6, although some partnerships may explore for minor suit slams if accepting the invitation), and 5NT is quantitative invite to 7NT (partner bids 6 or 7). However, you're probably right that it would be better to go through Gerber than to jump straight to 5NT.

In that probable sequence:

1N - 4(Gerber) - 4// ( probable reply - some aces) - 5N would be grand slam invite over that suit as trump, 4N would be blackwood over that suit.

so the grand slam invite currently could be:

1N - 4 - 4X ( reply for aces ) - 5(query for kings) - 5Y ( reply for kings ) - 5N (quantative invite for grand with no suit appointed )
