Scoring: IMP

Uncontested auction: random partner opens 3♦. I bid 5♦. It is passed out.

I chose 5♦ over 3N as I had no ♥ stopper. Correct decision? I can't see how I can expect parter to have a ♥ stopper.

Partner and I have a ten-card fit. What if the fit had been only 9 cards?

What would make my hand a pass as opposed to a game hand?

I am happy with the point count. Does anyone need more points or fewer points?

Any other thoughts you may have are welcome as well.

What would be required to make 5♦? Don't tell me in the number of HCPs.

I see nothing that would induce me to bid 5♦ unless opps bid ♥.

I would pass 3♦ a hope they find a ♠ or ♣ fit.

You need tricks not HCP. I would expect to lose 2 Heartss and one Spade in 5D.

Pass is your best bid.

3NT is likely hopeless opposite a normal 3D bid losing 4-5Hearts plus one spade.

This I had not considered but it makes perfect sense. It furthers the preempt and practically guarantess that opponents miss their fit or enter the auction at too high a level.

I also had not considered passing 3♦.

It's not the percentage bet. Think of it this way, he has 6 unknown cards, and so the expected number of hearts is 2. However, since you have long clubs and spades, it's not actually evenly divided, and so I'd be surprised to find partner with a singleton.

In particular, if he does have one, then you can definitely consider doubling hearts and leading a spade, or bidding 5 diamonds after the opponents find their 10 card heart fit.

This is a very small target to shoot for. Even then, partner doesn't have to have both AK of diamonds...

Can certainly double if opponents bid to 4♥. But bidding 5♦ ("after opponents find their 10 card heart fit") is bad move. For starter, from the bidding you can never be sure of the 10-card fit...

I agree...I was simply pointing out that there is no need to blast to 5 diamonds now; if one wishes it can be done later (but I personally would double and lead the spade).
