Close one. I feel compelled to overcall 2♥ since I don't need much from partner to produce a heart game.

I would overcall 2♥ at matchpoints. Obviously it could work out badly but a small plus against their partscore when we could make 2♥ will not be good either.

easy pass in my style. Pard will bid if it's our hand, due to his expected spade shortness

pass please! we're red and we have AQxx in their suit.

I would rather bid 2♥ now than give them a free run to a couple or 3 ♣ and then stick my neck out.

However, it's really close and I don't mind pass at all.

would rather overcall 1NT than double if I cannot pass, but I'd pass.

I've been known to try 1NT some days and 2H on other days with this hand. With mixed results.

At IMPs maybe I could make myself pass.

That's impossible. No one can give more than one hundred percent. By definition that is the most anyone can give.

We have different ideas about that AQXX of Spades. They are what makes 2♥ for me. When close between O/C and pass, length --even bad length--behind opener makes me more agressive.

I've been reading too much Ulf Nilsson... But I love his style, except that I can't quite bring myself to almost ignore suit quality.

With extra values and some shape, suit quality doesn't matter much IMO. Still, I am not quite convinced by his statement not to overcall with a 4 card suit in opener's suit with a top honor. If I have some extra value or good suits, I still think overcalling here is clear, because you may either hit a nice flop or find 3NT against aggressive openers, or find a reasonable partial at relatively low levels. Of course, if you play this style, you can't sac too much at high levels, which is the trade off.

I think with a certain hand strength suit quality takes a back seat to the need to compete. There is every reason to think this is our hand so get in there and fight.

you haven't had a tough overcall until you have to bid over 1♣ with ♠87653 ♥AK86 ♦K7 ♣KJ and I DON'T WANT TO HEAR ANY BUFFALO CHIPS ABOUT PASSING. :(
