3S does not seem like an unreasonable bid, but I'd just bid 2S

How about 2D, then rebid 2S/3S/4S cheaply. This tells partner D-help is wanted; spades can stand nearly alone.

No it will tell him that you have a spades, but longer diamonds.

If you have this highly unusual agreement, yes. Otherwise it shows ♦'s (longest) and ♠'s.

2♠ looks normal.

Thanks all. This was from a friendly match a few nights ago. At my table these were the opponent's cards, and they let us play and make 4H (cold on a spade lead). At the other table this hand bid an immediate 4S and made 4SX. My friends at the other table were complaining vociferously about the 4S bid, and I was having trouble judging lucky vs. good since it worked.

If given the chance, I would bid 3D, to show both of my suits.
