In the following auction, what do you suppose these calls mean?
(1♠) - pass - (4♠) - 4N
(dbl) - ?
- pass
- redbl
- 5♣
- 5♦

....4N - x?

One of redouble and pass should show a heart fit in case that is one of partner's suits. Not that I have that agreement with anyone.

in my meta redouble will ask partner to shut up if opponents bid 5♠. However something along the lines cherdano points is probably better.

This didn't quite get the response I would have hoped.
I polled a lot of good local players and the consensus was that:
xx = says we have ownership.
pass = no suit of our own. Please bid your hand out.
5♣/5♦ = real suits.
Cherdanno's suggestion about pass / xx (probably xx I would think) is interesting. I suppose it caters to the 4N bidder having ♥+♣ with responder 4522 for instance.
Anyway, it doesn't matter what you do, because these are the hands:
.
Partner xx'd (?) and I played 5♦ for -1400 after not judging the play not optimally. I suppose I could run to 5♥ (would you?).
LHO's weak 2 on ♠JTxxxx ♥Kxx ♦Kx ♣Kx generated the swing. At the other table the auction was p-p-p-4♥-AP

One problem is that you gave an auction that began with 1♠, not 2♠. My preference for opener is that double of 4N is keycard...what it meant was not specified, and I assume that the double was intended, systemically or otherwise, to suggest to responder NOT to save at 5♠.
As it is, if the auction ever came up, I suggest that redouble should be the strongest bid...in essence, a slam try if we find a fit, pass should be asking you to bid your lower suit, and bids should be to play (maybe a 7 card suit, with 2=2 or worse in the suits he expects you to hold). I guess that's what you found to be the consensus

We play that if partner bids a suited hand and that is DBLed (eg: (1C)-2NT-DBL ) then REDBL is some preference for the highest suit. (bidding the highest suit is clear preference).
As an extension it is a good idea to have REDBL showing hearts preference.
