just a little ATB for a change.

Scoring: IMP

1-1NT-p-2
3-p-p-4
p-p-x-end

which is a double doubled game swing

well we got lucky with out teammates who got a +590 but it really should have been a doubled double game swing because almost everybody in the field was playing 4x=.
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

Just a guess, but maybe South?

actually I think it is both instead of bidding 3 South could have called 4 and I think North's double of 4 is risky in front of what could be a 7 card suit.

South must have thought he showed his hand to partner. That was wrong. defending 4 with the south hand looks masochistic to me.

It looks like south didnt want to hog 4 all by himself after 4. You always learn to dont do that but on this hand dont be surprised if it is wrong.

Opener could warn partner:

1-1NT-p-2!
3! = self splinter w/extra length

Of course it also warns the opposition.

I don't think N should dbl 4, although it's understandable.

South bidding is ok IMHO. I don't like a self-splinter, it's too big an advantage for LHO being able to double (or not) 3.

I would probably have bid 4 myself but 3 is fine.

4s, instead of 3S would show just about this hand in our style --after 1S opening and no help from pard. Not a Namyats 4D opening because this 8-trick hand is composed of 2 real o/s tricks. The big advantage is making it harder for pard to double 4H ;)

I'm sure south would normally bid 4S but hated his xxx in diamonds. Meh, it is conservative but probably reasonable (when I think of hands that will pass 3S few make game on a diamond lead etc), but after they bid 4H south has to bid 4S I think, not that bidding like this is very conventional lol.

I might also have opened 4, or 4 NAMYATS, or even 2.

I won't blame anyone..
I would surely pass 4 Heart as south, I have two defensive tricks, I would bet on a spade ruff and/or some other tricks in partners hand.

I would double or pass with the North hand, no big difference.

So maybe we should talk about a direct 4 Spade (or a namyats 4 Diamond) opening or a 4 spade bid after 2 Diamond. Sorry this would not show this hand for me.
Kind Regards

Roland
