Scoring: IMP

This hand certainly caused a 'difference of opinion' at the table.

5H. Double is a possibility, but you are probably going to end in H anyway.

I'd make a takeout double, which gives us the extra chance that partner will leave it in, and also gives us a chance to reach diamonds.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

I will give us our best chance to reach hearts. Im my preferred methods this would be by bidding 5 Heart.
Kind Regards

I'd double, to keep most possibilities open.

If partner takes it out, we'll either play in 5♥ or some slam.
Kind regards,

5♥. Double will be the call of choice for BBF, but this hand is just too offensive for me.

offensive to me, also....the 5h call.....but i surely understand that would be some people's choice. double is also offensive, but perhaps less so, hence double and take that route to a minus, instead.

If you double then most likely this will end up in 4♠x= or 4♠x-1
If it is down 2, i want to be in 5♥
If pard bids 5♦ over X... oh well, you got a bit lucky, but i dount expect it to be such an improvement.

5♥ -- well i doun't expect to make it too often, but there are good chances that they woun't double.
Strong feelings about this.

Admittedly i do sometimes double with similar hands, but this is not the case.

5♥

This hand may not be as valuable on defence as a double might suggest...partners tend to leave these doubles in with flat hands, not expecting 6=4 over here.

If he has a yarb, then they may make an overtrick on a bad day. Of course, that -690 may be better than we do in 5♥.

But he may leave it in with a smattering of high cards and nowhere to go: say a 3=3=4=3 hand... would you take it out with Jxx xxx KQxx xxx, as an example?

As for finding diamonds... if your partners frequently bid 5♦ on these hands, may I suggest you buy lottery tickets? With that kind of luck, you'll be rich very soon.

If he does take it out, he'll usually bid either 5♣ or 4N. Over 4N are we really going to bid diamonds?

And if we were partner and heard us pull either 5♣ or 4N to 5♥, wouldn't (shouldn't?) we expect a better/different hand than this?

5H. Fairly close to double though.

Agree with MikeH about the offensive/defensive ratio - partner will leave the double in too often.

Not so pessimistic about double finding a diamond fit - 5D by partner over double is a very real possibility. Also don't agree partner will expect something very different if I double and pull 5C to 5H. He'll just expect a bit more defence.
