This is the new home of Laws & Rulings forum, part of the International Bridge Laws set of forums. While we are now hosted by BBO, this is not an online bridge facility, but it is a general set of forums for discussion of Laws, primarily in face-to-face play. Of course online problems are welcome as well.

This particular forum is the general one for the Laws, and the others are for Simple Rulings, Appeals and Appeals Committees and differences caused by the change in Law book, but do not worry too much if you put something in the wrong forum: Ed Reppert or I will move it. Ed Reppert and I would like to see suitable queries from anywhere. This is not really a forum to ask what the Laws should be, more to find the answers to problems.

We ask people who start threads to say where the query is from, which country, or put online if suitable. It is often suitable to use the "Topic Description" entry for the jurisdiction.

For anyone who has not seen us before, these forums have been going for many years, being hosted by Bridgetalk. However, Bridgetalk had to close, so we are very pleased that BBO have offered us a new home.

Come and see what we do!

I (blackshoe) am going to try to "clean up" some of these pinned topics. Hopefully that'll make them easier to use. I've unpinned "What Was Your Name in the States" but it's still available at the link if you need it.

Welcome David. Glad to see the IBLF is still alive and is now going to be incorporated into BBF. Will also be glad to see that we have another expert on the laws around here. I hope being under the BBF umbrella will lead to even greater participation than there was under Bridgetalk.

As a personal opinion, I think perhaps there should be a subforum called "Ask a question" or "Any other topic" for those who have queries that do not fit neatly into any of the other categories.

I think BBO were pretty kind giving us four forums! However, we can see how it goes.

But the main the difference between our forums, and other resources like BLML [bridge-laws mailing list] is that we feel the main purpose of these forums is to answer questions.

So we do not need an answer-the-question forum: that is what all our forums are.

I have a lot of difficulty posting here because my typing is so bad, and I generally rely on a spellchekka. But sadly the BBO forums, so good otherwise, do not have a spellchekka {shame! }.

Is there any way I can get a spellchekka which will work with these forums?

Does anyone know what spellchecker was used on our previous location. We were on an earlier version of the same forum software, so it might well work here also.

At my home pc, I use the browser "Firefox". It has an in-built spell-checker, that works with this sites software.

Not sure about Internet Explorer, but I've downloaded the Google Chrome browser (which is not perfect, but is a lot quicker displaying pages than IE). It has an English spellchecker built in (US version) - you can select all sorts of other languages including British English somewhere under the options pages.

Firefox also has spellchecker capabilities - iirc you have to download it as an additional plug-in (could be wrong about that) - quite a while since I used the old laptop that had that on.

Probably some other browsers are the same. These two are both free.

When I downloaded "Firefox" it came with a spellchecker. (American-English, says "Colour" and "Favour" is wrong.)

It was real easy, almost spam-like, to download.

Adding real versions of English to Firefox is easy, and telling it to use EN-GB rather than EN-US, if that is your preference, is harder, but not much.

To give an example, my neighbour to my right can see that the only word with an underline coloured red (indicating a word not authorised by the dictionary). Of course, as I'm using EN-CA, it wouldn't light up if I did give (some) American spellings.

Now, off to the Bridge Centre.

There are lots of spellcheckers which work with IE including ones you can add to the google tool bar if you use it.
Somehow they never have useful words in their dictionary like KJxx or AQxxx

Would be usefull if someone were to say somenthing like "I use spell checker XYZ with IE and I like it and you can find it at www...."

All the spllchekkas I have used for some time allow you to add words like 'KJxx' or 'Dhondy'.

I am glad there are lots of them: how do I find one?

If only there was some kind of magical website which let you type in things you were looking for on the internet and it told you where you might find those things...

Seriously, just google 'internet explorer spell checker' and you get half a million hits.

Nothing at all: we lent you a perfectly good language, and being good-natured we do not mind that you cannot spell all the words.

I didn't know these things existed.

Does anyone have experience with some of these and is willing to make a recommendation?
