We play

2NT = lowest two suits

3♣ = not lowest and not clubs - so whatever is left

cue = the other option

I think this defines everything except (1♣) 2♣ which we play as both majors - since there are otherwise two options for 3♣ without clubs.

Does anyone have an agreement for continuations after a simple preference.

For example

(1♣) 3♣ (PASS) 3♦
(PASS) ?

what now?

We play that 3♥ would be a natural fragment.

What about

3NT?

4♣?

4♦? In particular do you need extra length for this?

etc

This is not "specific" 2-suiters but at least it gets the Spade suit into play
for all overcalls. I also like the Advances and Overcaller followups which you may incorporate into your system:

Bailey Cuebids [ an improvement(?) over Michaels ] :

( 1C ) - ??
2NT = 2 lowest unbid, Ht/Diam
2C = Sp and Ht or Diam

( 1D ) - ??
2NT = 2 lowest unbid, Ht/Cl
2D = Sp and Ht or Cl

( 1H ) - ??
2NT = 2 lowest, Diam/Cl
2H = Sp and Diam or Cl

( 1S ) - ??
2NT = 2 lowest, Diam/Cl
2S = Ht and Diam or Cl

In general:
( 1A ) - 2NT = 2 lowest unbid

( 1A ) - 2A = Highest and ONE of the 2 lowest

-- Simple Advances are for "pass or correct".
-- Advancer "cues" to show a strong unbalanced hand.
-- Advancer bids 2NT! to show a strong balanced hand.
w/stop(s) in Opener's suit.
-- If Advancer bids the "known" suit ( usually Sp),
Overcaller bids his "unknown" suit to show a stronger hand.
-- If Advancer bids the "unknown" suit, Overcaller cues
OR bids 2NT to show agreement and the stronger hand

I've never had this problem, probably because by the time the bidding has got back to me it's always been at the four- or five-level.

It seems logical that the cuebid should show a good hand with equal length, so raising partner's preference would how an extra card there. I'm not sure about 3NT.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

Is very strong with a positional stopper silly?

Someone suggested to me that the cue-bid could be slammish. But that seems very infrequent compared with extra strength with and without extra length. The slammish hands would probably have to cue-bid too but equal length seems more reasonable. I think it would even be possible to play 4NT or Four of the other major after the cue-bid.

I actually started to write down an example of that, but it ended up as a hand where I'd drive 6♦ instead.
