1C for me as well. Given the conditions I wouldn't mind 3C, but I would never consider pass or 4C.

3♣ or 4♣ might be ok. I have enough stuff in the other suits that partner won't need that much for 3NT to be right so I am inclined not to go beyond 3NT immediately.

At this vulnerability both 3♣ and 4♣ show quite a reasonable hand for me.

With a club less this would be a no brainer 3 ♣, but with the 8. card? Never- at least not with a non passed partner.
So, I am too strong for 3 club, even in this vul. and have too much fear to miss 3 NT while opening 4 ♣, so this is an easy 1 ♣ opening.

But 1♣ is OK for me.

I don't bypass 3NT on second position, so it must be 3♣, come on, we are in second position, we are suposed to preempt solid. That's what we got, our scattered honnors are useless.

I really don't like this hand, and choose 1♣ only as the least of a number of ugly evils. I only hope that the opps stay out of our auction, but somehow they never seem to when I invite them in by opening 1♣ with sub-minimum high card and defensive values.

I think I would open 3♣ with this hand. I'm 2nd red. My hand is good for clubs and for NT. If partner can make 4M he'll probably bid it himself because he knows I'm not broke and if we can make 3N he'll definitely bid that.

The obvious downside is that I pretty much will bar us from slam here. But that would likely be a difficult proposition anyway.

1♣ is obvious to me. There are seats and vuls to have sound preempts in, but there are also 11 counts with 8 card suits...

I don't hate 3♣ with this hand due to the loose Q and Jx in majors, but I do have a pretty good 8 card suit so I am also in the 2nd seat 1♣ rather than preempt camp.

I hate the "4♣ passes 3N" bromide, but it certainly applies here. 3N has too much potential with all of these bits and pieces.

There are two reasonable ways to go about this:

3♣: If we didn't have the outside stuff, I would think this is unanimous.

1♣, then 2♣, then 3♣. While we aren't showing the 8th club, we aren't denying it either.

Personally, I like 1♣ by a little. It is so close that if you take away those supporting (maybe worthless, maybe not) cards in the majors that I would open 3♣.
