We have spades - no reason to keep partner out of it.

I would bid 3, it is pretty unlikely that we have game, and this should create a pretty good bidding problem for my opponents if they don't have a heart fit.

I voted for 2S too quickly because I thought I was red on white. However, now that I realize that I'm white on red, I think I bid 3S

Clearly we don't have a game unless partner has a trememdous passed hand for spades. Why not make it as difficult as possible for the opponents?

Now, while it might appear that 4S makes it the most difficult, the "default" action is to be doubled (or to be passed out when partner has 10 or 11 and a spade partial higher than any contract they can make is all you can make.)

Even if I can make only 2S, there's enough of a chance they'll bid over 3S to save me. But the big bonus I'm looking for is that it's their hand and I've stolen too much room with a 3S bid.
I tend to lead fourth best - as opposed to the best suit, the second best suit, or the third best suit for our side

3 because of the colors. I would like to shut out their +600 in 5 of a minor and this looks like a good start.

I might even get a genius on my right who rebids 3N on his Txx

The swingy action is to pass throughout and not let them identify that there is this glaring problem in spades...

normaly i think i bid 3S, but that really depends on oppontents and how the play till there went. can imagine, if i see rho counting his/her points to a loud "19" that i pass and see the bidding 1-1-2NT-3NT. on some good day I bid 4S.

3S has the plus, that partner will raise with fit, so we dont have tricks against their contracts. Dont want to hit partner on a spade single and some spread jacks and queens

2 for me. It took me a couple bad scores for learning not to bid 3 here. Even at these colors.

Extremely difficult for them to double me, when I have the four high spades. I will be at most 800 vs their vul. game. (ok, it will not always make, but I will not always get doubled.)

Makes me remember a hand from the other night:

Bidding:

1NT* - (Pass) - Pass - (Double)
All pass.

* 12-14

The player on lead had

AKQxxxx

(Opener had 12, responder 7 balanced, and the doubler had 12.)

I'm usually an aggressive preempter, but I don't like 3 on this hand: it's too balanced, has too many hearts, and has too much defence. Also, partner passed in second seat rather than first, so he's not quite as limited as he might be.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

Partners (and LHO's) average strength is about 9 HCP.
To make 2 partner has to cover 2 of my 7 loser and that's not unlikely.
Opps are seldom strong enough to to make a 3 level contract.
Partner can enter the bidding if he likes.

Hi,

I like 3S.

1S is ok.

2S is not enough, given the vulnerability, and since we
are facing a passed p.

4S is too much.

With kind regards

2 for me; having three dead hearts discourages me from bidding 3. Let them find a negative double as a passed hand.

I can see myself overcalling 1 or 3 with this, but not 2.
A sneaky pass is, of course, also a possibility.
Kind regards,

and the bidding goes 2NT pass 3NT and partner doesn't find the spade lead. :)
Or do you have X as conventional for spades??

No, I play a double to ask partner to lead his shorter major. I guess he'll hit the right one anytime he isn't void in spades...... :P

Really, I thought it was universal that this asks for a diamond lead in this kind of auction (opener's minor).
