This weekend I had a hand somewhat similar (but different) to this one:

J108xxx
-
K109x
Qxx

The auction went

2NT - p - 3D - p
3H - p - p - ??

Would you balance? None vulnerable, IMPs.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

No but its probably right.

I don't have enough of a sample to determine if its right to get in here.

Yes, holding my breath while I do it.

Any values partner has outside hearts, are likely to be well-placed.

Against very soft competition, I would pass, fearing they would stumble into a making 4.

Yes. I hate it when they play in my partner's 5-card suit, because it means partner gets all the fun and I just have to follow suit (or not, if he draws trumps). I've paid my table money too, and I'm going to prove it by bidding 3.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

Do I like -300 vs.-170? No. Maybe even -170 vs. -420? No.
Do I like +50 vs. -140? Yes.

I pass. They likely made their game/partial decision correctly, but maybe not.

I would. Balancing like a sickman is my last remaining vice. That and Coke Zero.

easy pass. If you are not good enough to suggest a 4S save by bidding 3S the round earlier you are surely not strong enough to hope to make 3S.
From Psych "I mean, Gus and I never see eye-to-eye on work stuff.
For instance, he doesn't like being used as a human shield when we're being shot at.
I happen to think it's a very noble way to meet one's maker, especially for a guy like him.
Bottom line is we never let that difference of opinion interfere with anything."

I also would like to bid, feel that bidding is probably right, but... I think I would reluctantly pass.

Not sure what I would do if the hand were similar (but different).
That's impossible. No one can give more than one hundred percent. By definition that is the most anyone can give.

I just made a simulation at: www.resultmerchant.com. It supports your post.
