Scoring: IMP

1 Dbl 4 5
Pass to you

Barometer is on: you are down three IMPs with two normalish results and this board to go.

Pass. You need a hell of alot to make 6, and if partner had what you need to make 6 he'd probably have bid it.

Besides, partner's 5 bid may have been based on trying to generate a swing. Why hang partner?

I would pass. I have learned through (bad) experiences to give partner a lot of room in auctions like this. This hand in not hugely above average.

I think a 1 overcall is probably more common than X on this hand, since I'm not going to count my stiff K as extra on offense. That said, if the other table sees

(1)-1-(4)-?

Will partner bid 5 on xx x KQx QT9xxxx or similar hands given you bid 1 and not X?
Will you reopen with a double if 4 passes back to you?

I think the answer to both of these is clearly no, and hence you may have already won the board finding a decent 5 Vul game over their 4 preempt.

What? Of course you will reopen with a X over 4H if you overcall 1S...

Pass.

I think there is a fair chance we are missing slam, but equally there is a good chance we are just off two Aces.

I would have bid one spade, devaluing the K a little, and with a hand that looks very suitable for play in spades.

Would have bid 1S instead. Now I pass.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

I would have overcalled 1. And it is not even a question of devaluing the K. I don't want to make a takeout double on this shape. You have a good spade suit that can be bid conveniently. I don't want to prompt partner to get too active in diamonds when spades is likely to be the most likely game.

Having doubled and partner having bid 5, I pass. Not really a close decision.

With 5 good I prefer to O/C 1 which is also devaluing the K of .

I'll now pass 5 as I need to find the right cards in PD's hand to make and don't think he's favorite to hold them.

Can you tell why you disagree with (Some weeks ago you made a post saying that there are some maxs for an overcall. I think that hand had 17 pts. So I'm surprised you are so clear about 1S here)
thanks,
Koen

I do not evaluate this hand to be as good as 18? Isn't that kind of self explanatory?

I don't know the hand. IMO
  • Prefer a 1 overcall to _X.
  • Now _P = 10, 6 = 5.
