Had a session earlier with two fairly similar hands, one 4441, the other 5431.

In both cases, you open on an 11/12-count, LHO overcalls in a major (your singleton), partner bids a new suit at the two-level and RHO bounces to 4M. With four-card support, what's your plan?

- Compete to the five-level immediately
- Pass, planning on pulling to five of partner's suit if he doubles
- Other
- Depends on honour location, etc

I would probably bid at the 5 level immediately, almost certainly with 5431, quite possibly with 4441 (5431 is surely much better than 4441).
Probably I could be more definite if I saw an actual hand. :)
That's impossible. No one can give more than one hundred percent. By definition that is the most anyone can give.

I play pass as forcing, so with a minimum and 4-card support I'd bid immediately.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

Really a pass is forcing? I don't like that agreement, to me a 2/1 in competition just forces us to 3 of the suit (or 2N), so there is no way I think we should be in a forcing pass when they bid 4M.

Agree. Pass is only forcing when one is in a game forcing situation. The 2 level free bid by partner did not create a game forcing situation, so my pass is not forcing.

We know that we have the balance of the points; the fact that the opponents are at the four level suggests that we probably have a fit somewhere; and we're uncertain about which suit our fit is in, how good our fit is, and how great our preponderance of the high cards is. Isn't that the sort of situation for which forcing passes were invented?

The forcing pass is a bad thing only the opponents can make game with a combined 18-count or less, and we don't have a save against it. Whilst that can happen, I don't think it's particularly frequent.
