I have been told of a convention and I'm trying to find some written
material on it. Does anyone know its name and where to find a
description with details?
Responder bids 2 spades over opener's 1 NT, asking for the
openener's longest minor. If it is clubs, opener rebids 3 clubs; if
it is diamonds he rebids 2 NT. If responder want to play part score
in clubs and opener had bid 3 clubs, responder passes; if the
responder wants part score in diamonds and opener bid clubs, he bids
3 diamonds and opener passes. If he wants to play part score and
opener rebid 2 NT, responder bids 3 clubs or 3 diamonds. Any 3 bid
in the minors by responder is a closeout.
With a better hand, responder can rebid 3 NT over openers rebid to
play if the minor suits do not match; bid 5 of the matching minor;
or invite to slam in the matching minor.
Sound familiar?

one version of minor suit stayman (2s) requires game invite or better stregnth, see
http://home.nikocity...nvent/MSS2S.htm
for a non-forcing version, somewhat similar to what you are talking about, see
http://home.earthlink.net/~zebulonhsd/arti...um/6.28.00.html
I use to play this...
1N-2♠ either signoff in ♦ or weak minor two suiter, or invite minor two suiter. Opener rebids 2NT with Max, and 3 of his better minor with minum. If responder corrects 3♣ to 3♦ it was the ♦ signoff. If he corrects 2NT to 3♦ the same. If he bids 3♣ over 2NT it shows weak minor two suiter, and opener pass/corrects. Any other bid is forcing since opener showed extra vales with 2NT (except 3NT).
1N-2N is either signoff in clubs, or game force minor two suiter. Opener bid 3♣ over 2NT and responder either passes (♣ signoff), or bids 3♦ - game forcing minor two suiter.

I played this in tournaments years ago. I invented it myself (undoubtedly so have many others) and never gave it a name, nor have I ever seen it in print. Here's my best recollecton of the system notes:
2♠=minor suit signoff or game/slam try one or both minors.
Opener rebid 2NT with longer ♦, 3♣ with longer ♣.
It is assumed that responder knows what suit is trumps. Responder's rebids
3♣/3♦=to play.
3♥/3♠=stiff. Opener rebids 3NT to show duplication.
3NT=signoff. Opener preferred the wrong minor.
4♣/4♦= bid minor is trump, stiff in the other minor, slam try. Opener bids first
step with duplication.
4♥=slam try in ♣, no stiff.
4♠=slam try in ♦, no stiff.
Higher minor suit bids=to play.

Hi mikestar!
Spoiler
The main disadvantage of any kind of MSS is possibility to miss easy game or to bid hopeless one. What you will bid over strong NT with:MSS will not help you, because even your p bid 3♣, he can still hold Ax in ♦ and 3NT can be cold. Only solution is to use 2 minor transfers with at least 1 free step, to be possible for opener to show fill there, without sacrificing 3 of minor sign off.

I've had a lot of success with the Scanian NT structure.
[The Swedes seem to product a lot of good bridge theorists]
Using this approach, responder's 2S overcall asks partner to clarify his range, along with his tolerance for the minors. Opener's 3NT rebid shows a minimum hands. Holding a maximum, opener will express a preference for Clubs or Diamonds.
The 2S response is used for a variety of hands types including:
Weak single suited hands with Diamonds
Game invitational balanced hands
Weak hands with 5+/5+ in the minors
Game forcing hands with 5+/5+ in the minors
The Scanian NT structure complements this bids with an immediate 2NT response that asks if partner has a weak doubleton. After 2NT, partner will responde 3N with no weak double. With a weak doubleton, he will show it naturally.
I'm happy with the Scanian structure, though there is some memory load. I haven't played it seriously in several months and doubt that I could do so now.
