For one thing, 2N by west on the 3rd round is hideous

When one uses 4SF, it is important to tell opener WHY you used it, as soon as possible. Here, we used 4SF because we have a big hand AND club support.

Let partner in on the joke... bid 3♣ over 2♥

1♥  1♠
2♣  2♦
2♥  3♣
3♠  4♦
4♥  4♠
4N  5♦
5♥  7♣

is a plausible auction, in which 4N is NOT keycard, but shows a hand that is too good to just bid 5♣. This allows responder to show the ♦K (having already shown the spade K and the diamond A). This in turn allows opener to show the heart K, having already cued the heart A. And in turn this tells responder that his heart Q is golden, and partner cannot possibly make these calls with bad clubs, so grand has to be reasonable....

I could see responder bidding 5N over 5♥ to be on the safe side, and now opener would bid the grand.. responder cannot possibly be hoping for A AKxxx xxx AKQx.. that hand would jump shift over 1♠, and opener has shown the spade A and the heart AK, so responder cannot be looking for 3 top trumps... yet is still looking for grand.. so KQ has to be good enough

Most players don't trust themselves, or partner, to bid slams, let alone grand slams, without keycard..

1♥  1♠
2♣  2♦
2♥  3♣
3♠  4♦
4♥  4N (if keycard)
5♦  5♥
5N  7♣

5♦ 0/3 keycards; 5♥ asks for the trump Queen, 5N shows the trump Queen, with a side King that cannot be shown below 6♣... responder knows which King it is, and so has an easy 7♣ call.

There are other sequences plausible as well: but they all entail SETTING TRUMP as early as possible.

2 NT was really horrible.

My try:

1 ♥ 1 ♠
2 ♣ 2 ♦
2 ♥ ??? 3♣
3 ♥ 4 ♣
4♠ 5 ♦
5 ♥ 7 ♣

I put some questions marks for the third bid, because I would hate to rebid just 2 Heart, but hadn't found a better one.
3 Clubs sets trumps, 3 Heart is a uebid, 4 Clubs askes, 4 Spade shows a good hand with 3 KCs, 5 Diamond sks for the queen, 5 H yes and K of H, this is enough for the grand.
IF I had a tool to ask for the jack of Hearts, I would search for 7 NT, but I don't have it.
Kind Regards

Roland

I had the west hand at the (digital) table. Our auction:

..... 1H
1S - 2C
2D - 2H
3C - 4C
4D - 4S
4NT- 5D
5H - 7C
pass

I was playing with someone with whom I don't have many agreements. 5D showed 0 or 3 keycards, 5H confirmed all of them and asked for the queen, partner didn't bother to show the club queen and heart king but just jumped to the grand (wrongly imo).

Playing with cherdano I would start with 2C to create a gameforce immediately. Our auction would be more artificial:

.... 1H
2C - 2H (extra values, various hand types)
2S - 3C (2S asks, often balanced, 3C is natural, showing 4)
4C - 4H
4NT- 5D
5H - 6H
7C
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

How about:

1♥ - 1♠
2♣ - 2♦
2♥ - 3♣(1)
3♥(2) - 3♠(3)
4♣(4) - 4♦(5)
4♠(6) - 4NT(7)
5♥(8) - 7♣(9)

(1) Agree with Mikeh -- after 4th suit GF it is time to set clubs.
(2) Cuebid showing two of the top three hearts and no top diamond.
(3) Cuebid showing first or second round control.
(4) Good hand -- 3NT would be a minimum hand (letting partner decide to play there).
(5) Kickback 1430 Keycard in clubs.
(6) Three keycards.
(7) Ask for club queen.
(8) Club queen and heart king.
(9) Responder has a pretty clear picture of opener's hand. If anything it might be better in case opener has six hearts. Note that the pointy suit shape (1-3 or 2-2 or 2-1/1-2 with 6♥) is irrelevant.

OK that is the second person who states that 1H-1S-2C-2D-2H-3C-3H is a cuebid. This is how I bid when I have 6 hearts and 4 clubs. Yes, I would bid this without a heart cue, A QJ10xxx Ax QJxx
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

1♥ (normal)
2♣ (I like establishing GF when I can)
3♣ (normal)
3♦ (unclear which direction)
3♥ (hedge cue)
3♠ (clarifies)
4♣ (true cue)

At this point, Opener is known to have AKxxx in hearts and KQxx in clubs. So, Responder takes over...

4♠ (1430 clubs)
5♥ (two with)

Responder can now count the pointed AK/AK as covering all of Opener's pointed losers. The J10 of clubs is really nice. The key is whether the heart suit can be played without losers. 3-3 works. 4-2 with clubs OK works. Opener might have the heart Jack or 10. Lots of other variations and possibilities.

7♣.

It would be nice to check on the heart suit further, to push 7NT onto the table if right. Opener's heart Jack would do it for me, if I could find out. But, I cannot quite figure out how to ask the right question. 6♥ does not seem to ask that question, and figuring out some convoluted slam-level LTTC sequence, even if possible, is unlikely to yield understanding by partner on the exact same lines. So, I'm practical at this point.

it's fairly easy if you play 2H to show weakness. 2S to show extra and long h,
2N shows extra and sp support. 3C shows 5-5 extra. 3D shows extra, but can't bid NT.
the it would go like
1H 1S
2C 2D
3D 4D(RKC in C)
4S(3 or 0 kc) 4N(CQ?)
5H(yes and HK) 7C
