Hi,
My openings often come under some scrutiny :) Playing with my fav Aussie, we had this hand and disagreed on the opening. I'm interested in what your style is. If you don’t open this 1nt why not and will you rasie a 1M response from p?

1NT, if you play 15-17 notrumps then there is no discussion possible.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

1NT

I'd also open AQJ QJx xx AJxxx as 1NT.

If I was a jack lighter, then I'd bid 1 and say 1NT over any major suit response.

1NT = 15-17 balanced
1x, rebidding 1NT = 12-14 balanced

Raising the major is a distortion, in my opinion.

Still decidedly intermediate - don't take my guesses as authoritative.

raising on 3 cards should imply a goodish ODR. I like requiring an outside singleton or maybe 6m3M22. This hand sucks as ODR and I'd open it 1NT notwithstanding the not so sexy QJ doubleton.
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

If you want to downgrade for QJ tight, then you should upgrade for AJ962, and upgrade a little bit for two aces and touching honors.
I can't imagine downgrading this to 12-14, so I would open 1N.

Hi,

1NT, assuming you are playing 15-17.

It is said, that experts regular upgrade, but rarely
downgrade.

You could of course make a point for downgrading
the given hand, QJ tight in one suit, QJx in another
are reason enough.
E.g. if you ask the LTC, he will tell you that the hand
has 8 loosers, the expected value for a 15/16HCP
hand is 6, and for a 15/16 bal. hand 6,5, so this is a
fairly bad 15 count.
------------------------------------------------------------
Assuming, I did not open the hand with 1 NT, than
I would rebid 1NT, selling the hand as 12-14.
I rarely raise with 3 card support, and if I do, I am
certainly not balanced

With kind regards

Unless you have had extensive partnership discussions there will always be potential disagreement about marginal hands - one player might upgrade freely or occasionally and the other never.

I wouldn't worry about these sorts of disagreements near the boundaries.

For me this is a normal minimum strong 1NT. Sure the QJ might be useless but they might have some value and on average are certainly not worthless. This hand has enough plus features to make up for this flaw without downgrading. However I would understand a partner who did downgrade.

True.

What I was aiming for was that the diamond weakness would not dissuade me from opening NT. Potential wastage in a QJ doubleton is a different issue.

I think downgrading is in the realm of possibility, but I would never do it. 1NT for me.

fwiw, I did not actually disagree with opening 1NT, I said it was 'Dodgy'.
