Ever since one of my partners asked me 'Why don't you just bid like a human being?' when I doubled with 5-4 in the majors I've bid my 5-card major.

Just wondering what you answered.

I would have said "what makes you think I'm human?" :P

Double, it's not even close. If I bid 1 and later double, that shows high cards and denies takeout-double shape. I don't expect partner to trot out a bad 4-card suit over the later double; he will run back to spades with as little as xx. Or convert to penalty with 1.5 defensive tricks against clubs.

Those are not the results I long for.

I thought one spade now and double of club rebid later was clear.
