Doubling caters to finding a 4-4 heart fit or a diamond fit. 1♠ caters to specifically finding a 5-3 spade fit.

As usual, we agree about most low level bidding decisions. I used to double these but have missed too many 5-3 ♠ fits and have enough to double again and also to rebid ♥ to show 5-4 (unless PD introduces ♦ in which case we have 9 or 10 of them)

But the difference is you still have very good chances of finding a 4-4 fit on the side after 1♠. Your chances of finding a 5-3 spade fit after double are almost nonexistant.

But it is a matter of style.

I was interested that several of the good players here would treat the given hand as a two-bid hand and will try to incorporate that into my evaluation going forward.

But this is not the question. the first bid is 1 ♠.
If I had happen to have 4540, I had bid 1 Heart, no problems.....yet.

As it is, I'm worried not about the 4-4 heart fit, but a 4-4 diamond fit.
If I bid now and X later, I'm expecting partner to leave it in.

1. the opps are always so rude after they wrote down their - 800
2. my pd had no penalty pass, he just did not want to bid 4 Heart on
xx, KQxxx,Kx,xxxx ("But I just had 8 HCPS!")
3. my pd always thinks that if I double now that I have a black two suiter. Something like KQxxx,x,xx,Akxxx.
And he does not want to ruin the score with Ax,Qxx,Axxx, xxxx.
4. Another mad reason

I would even bid 1♠ on this hand, and then double 2cpp or 3cpp Obv not as happy about it as the OP hand
