7 makes or goes down on bad breaks? Pretty unbiddable, anyway.

The deciding factor for me is the third heart. If hearts are eight long in lefty (likely) bidding 6 only loses if hearts are 1-1 and pard doesnt have the Ace AND has non-solid trumps.

I'll gamble my 4-5 winners cover pards or we have a squeeze.

I agree with bidding 6, but I don't think it is likely that LHO has 8 hearts. There are many hands with 7 hearts where we would get a majority vote for 4 (1st seat all white) on BBF. Given that we have 3 hearts, these are even more likely than usual. I would make it roughly even odds between 7 and 8 hearts.
The easiest way to count losers is to line up the people who talk about loser count, and count them. -Kieran Dyke

If 5 clubs makes exactly, and 6 clubs goes down 1, you gain 450 points by stopping.
If 6 clubs makes, you gain 500 points by bidding.

The difference is that in Imps your partner will not bid 5C for a save . Hes not hoping for down 2 hes not hoping for down 1 hes hoping to make it. Not always of course but at least some amount of the time he wanted the contract to cash in.

The same for bidding 4S red over 4H all RED. In MP down 2 is probably going to be a good result so it might make sense to bid 4S with no hope of making it. But in IMPs its would be foolish to concede 500 when they might go down in 4H. So a 4S here (like a 5C in the problem) show at least some slight hope of making it.
From Psych "I mean, Gus and I never see eye-to-eye on work stuff.
For instance, he doesn't like being used as a human shield when we're being shot at.
I happen to think it's a very noble way to meet one's maker, especially for a guy like him.
Bottom line is we never let that difference of opinion interfere with anything."
