Yes, I know.

I didn't mean to suggest that I know the right answer, otherwise I wouldn't post it.

No I didn't mean that either. What I meant was that some will bid 6 and say wtp and others will pass and say wtp. I am in the 6 camp.

Everyone has their cutoff somewhere. In fact I say this is very close (the 5 level is way different than the 4 level.) Pass for me. My rule is I don't bid slam on these unless I would be very surprised to see it go down, and here I wouldn't be.

Those who pass and say wtp. Should stay away from IMPs.

Hi,

6C.

Given my 3 Hearts, partner will surely
have a Singelton at most, and Chances
are great that he has the Ace of Clubs,
i.e. 6C will have play most of the time,
and be quite often cold.

And maybe the Opening leader is looking
at an void in Hearts.

Change the Heart holding, remove an X
putting it into Spades or Diamonds, and
I would most likely pass.

With kind regards
Marlowe

I agree with Josh that this is very close. I'm not giving my partner just as much leeway for a 5 overcall as I do with a 4 overcall (or a 4M opening). I'm in the 6 camp.
Kind regards,
Harald

6 and I don't think it's close. For heaven's sake, it have a totally unexpected MONSTER. More worried of missing 7 than going down in 6.

Its IMPs, to even think about passing is 100% nonsense.

Ill make 7 much more often then ill go down in 6.

6, hoping clubs make an even number of tricks :)
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

Yup, bidding feels right. As others have said, a bid at the five-level is quite different from one at the four-level.

6C

I feel I have to, but I don't feel particularly confident. I wouldn't think partner owed me much if he had AK to seven and King of hearts.

I don't understand the logic of this....

If 5 clubs makes exactly, and 6 clubs goes down 1, you gain 450 points by stopping.
If 6 clubs makes, you gain 500 points by bidding.

Why does the method of scoring matter?

I'm not saying bidding slam is wrong (I still think it's very close either way.) But it's easy to be enamored with how good our hand is and and be distracted from how terrible our holdings in hearts and clubs are. I would sooner bid 7 with Axxxx x Axxxx Jx than 6 with the current hand. To see why, wait for the singleton heart lead when partner has KQx x xx AKQxxxx (I know that doesn't make 7 opposite my example. That is not my point...)

Maybe bidding 6 is right anyway, I won't get into an argument about it since I don't feel that strongly. But with such terrible breaks, it's not as trivial as some posters indicate.

The deciding factor for me is the third heart. If hearts are eight long in lefty (likely) bidding 6 only loses if hearts are 1-1 and pard doesnt have the Ace AND has non-solid trumps.

I'll gamble my 4-5 winners cover pards or we have a squeeze.
