With a solid 8 bagger at these colors I'm more inclined to open 5, so with an 8-5, I think I'll open 6.
The one thing I won't do is pass, but I know many that would.

Not sure how to take that quote, but it certainly sounds like you think there's a "right" way to bid an 8-5. I long stopped presuming I knew what's the best way to bid with freaks. I certainly believe that 1♦ could work out being the right bid as could pass, or 5♦ or 6. I'm just taking my "guess" with 6 on this hand.

Very true. However, I don't want their opponents' results either.

At our table:
6♦-6♥-X-all pass -1660
This was a 3 table event, and -1660 turned out to be a 50%!
The other auctions were amazing:
2NT*(minors)-X-p-p-p(!!!)
"I thought I might take 8 diamond tricks" (no, really, he really said that)
-6 for 1400 and 100%!
1♦-X-2♠-p
3♣-4♥-X(!!!)-XX
5♦-5♥*-X-p
6♣-X-p-p
p(!!!)
"I have better clubs than diamonds"
Double dummy defense can take 11 tricks in clubs, but they only took 8 for -1700.
Yes, I could have mentioned the exact circumstances (ie bidding judgment of other players in the club), but I was more interested in the Absolute Correct bid (which of course doesn't exist, but still).

This reminds me of a hand not quite so extreme where I had 1=1=7=4
I had about 10 hcp including AQ in diamonds.
Partner opened 2NT - weak 5/5 in the majors.
I was tempted to bid 3♣ which was an artificial GF the first step of which would have shown diamond shortage - quite a likely hand for partner I thought - which i would the pass. Luckily I didn't try this as partner was 5=5=2=1 so would have made some other bid.
I passed and 2NT became the final contract - well i might take seven diamond tricks. Partner's diamonds were Kx!!!!
A diamond was led
-1.

True but I know Standard American and what better reason could I have for playing Precision? - Hideous Hog

Never is a bold word.
If 8-5 isn't enough, what about a 9-4 or a 10-3?
