2♥/♠/3♣ is sign off, and you can miss game
3♥ is inv with 6+ cards and you can play wrong game/score
2NT deny support in ♦ and ♠ and hide your willing to play suit contract, because of 5 cards in ♥ and support in ♦. You can play again wrong game/score
3♠ is 3 fit, inv (or if you denied fit with 1NT, then Tx fit and good ♦ suit, inv)
Over 3♦, if p like to play game, can continue with 3♥- 3 or good 2 cards and you can raise him then to game. By the way here 3♠ must be artifical for 3NT without stop in ♥ - with weak hand and 6+♠ opener's rebid must be directly 2♠ instead of 2♦.

The only person who agreed with my choice for a bid (which was 2♥s) above in writing, expressed views to support the bid that I don't agree with.
First, when my partner rebids 2♦ he/she does not deny a six card ♠ suit, rather denies a six card suit and a minimum. We fully agree with yzerman's view on this posted in the following thread ( http://bridgebase.lunarpages.com/~bridge2/...hp?showtopic=52 )
Second, some expressed the view that 2♥ was a signoff. I don't believe this either. It is not strongly encouraging, in fact, it is discouraging, but I expect the following possible continuations.
1) Partner with a good hand and 6♠ (bad hand he would not rebid 2♦) will rebid 2♠ or with 3 card ♥ fit raise.
2) Partner with balanced 15-17 will rebid 2NT (we don't bid 2NT directly)
3) Partner with 5-5 in his suits and doubleton ♥ will pass
4) Partner with 55 or more and shorter in ♥ will usually pull as well.
Now, I am actually "strong" for 2♥ but by bidding it, but my suit is horrid and my distribution not wonderful. I will be well placed if I catch partner with any of the good hands well he will bid again, against that if he is weak we may end up in the wrong spot, where we might should be in ♦. Like I said, I will need to re-evaluate...

Thanks for the explaination of why P could have a six card S suit - as an Intermediate player who is learning 2/1 I hadn't heard of it

..............................................Hi Mike!....................................................
To play JS rebids of 1NT RF as fit you neeed to play 2/1 as RF when rebid 3 of 2/1 suit or JS responses as inv. There is another way through transfer advances, but far more complicated (look NTC
