Favorable with an 8-card suit? I would try 5, no strong opinion though.

I'd open 5 is I were the weaker team, and 4 if I thought we had an edge. The suit isn't great and 8221 is a cousin of 7222.

Change the hand a little for the better and I open 5.

Obviously I cannot argue that 5D sucks in any ways but general thinking since we're talking about how high to preempt but:

5D is very committal and will rarely induce the opponents to bid something other than getting doubled. With 6.5 tricks (jlall trick count) I really don't want to concede a likely 500 or unlucky 800 into what may not even be a game. Partner's shape and defense are unknown, we have a potential defensive trick, and it just seems presumptuous to think they will make 4M. Of course this argues against all preempts, but I would much rather open 5 on a nice offensive 7-4 or 8320 or even this shape with a better suit. If we have a good save partner is still in the game after 4D and we haven't lost a ton unless they get to 5M instead of doubling us for 300 (ie 4D-4H-5D-5H instead of 5D-X-p-p-p). I just don't think this hand, which lacks the offense necessary for such a big bid and has some defense, is the right hand to go so big.

Also I think it's "normal" to open a hand with 1 less diamond 3D, even if you add a club in it's place. In general I think 1 extra trump should generally mean opening 1 level higher, not 2.

tbh I would much rather open 3D than 5D.

Nothing, as far as I can see.
Clear 4 IMO.

4 seems right to me (Systemically, I have to open 3NT to show a 4-level minor suit preempt, as 4 of a minor is Namyats), but I know that my regular partner would open 5 (Maybe 8, since he opened 4 last night in IMP pairs on AQxxxx).

I'm for 4. 5 for me shows quite a bit better hand. 5 down a bunch is rarely good as often they will not be able to make anything. Therefore I like a shot at making 5minor opposite a fairly ordinary (not bad) dummy.

4 if I could, but I play Namyats, and 3NT shows AK/AQ.
