Shame on you, Mike! I think I will send a copy of this to the European Court of Human Rights. Needless to say, half of our fleet is already on the way to Halifax. I would take evasive action if I were you.

Roland

I meant no offense to Danish literature.. altho some might wonder how strong that is, given that the most famous fictional Dane is a creation of an English playwright :)

BTW, Roland... by all means send your entire Navy to Halifax.... I live 4 time zones away on an island in the Pacific B)

I take solace in the fact that the Danish navy will, I gather, no longer be harrassing innocent Canadian seagulls as they nest on and forage around Hans O, that well-known Canadian island resort.... so even if the good citizens of Halifax have to put up with drunken Danish sailors cavorting in the streets, it will not be all bad news :)

Needless to say, but I passed and the final contract was 3♣ :)

And that was a frownie face?

I would have guessed, if partner passed, that they had game in a black suit.

Partner's balanced 12 with four clubs combined with your 9 probably makes a game by the other side unlikely.

I am curious how you look back at this now that everybody says 3H is obvious. Do you see this as a sign that requiring such strong hands to act is a losing agreement? Do you see it as judgement mistake? Or do you just see it as bad luck, a bad hand for your methods that are otherwise fine?
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

You mean something like...

Seriously, though, I don't tend to bid based on "what if partner has an aboslute max". If partner has a balanced 10 count with 3 clubs, which I think is more common, I think game becomes a good chance for them.

Let me put it this way. If the 3♣ bid had been second hand, so you can be pretty sure partner does not have a 12 count, does that change your call?

lol so now we have to get into a hand constructing battle? Fine balanced 10 count with 3 clubs coming up

Doing this proves so much! Are you trying to show that if the opponents have a combined 19 (or 21?) with their long suit breaking 4-0 they probably have game? Ok then.

BTW an "absolute max" for pard to pass it out would be a balanced 14 or bad 15.

I think you can do better than that Josh, a balanced 5-count should be enough to make game.

Nah, I should have put a winky face or something up there...hoping that you'd get it from the "seriously though".

You didn't answer my question. If it were a second hand 3♣, instead of a first hand, then would you pass or bid 3♥?

(my partners never pass with a balanced 14 or 15 here. Not saying that they shouldn't).

lol, actually this was the full deal, you might fail to believe it ;)

Traveller says 3♥ was not a great contract, althou it might be better than allowing 3♣ to make 11 tricks as we did

A balanced 5 count where we have game AND they don't would be sweet. Hmmm

Got it!

4 count, woot. And I didn't even need a 10 card fit lol.
