MP's
E/-
Qxxxx-void-xx-Qxxxxx
MP's, no one vul, East opens 1 acol (4+)
Agreements:
2: 5c and 5cMinor. No agreement on strength. (You would expect around 10 HCP if partner would bid it.)
2/3: weak jumps
=> What do you bid?

I would never pass a hand like this not vul at matchpoints. If my partner couldn't stand for me to bid Michaels then I would bid 1. Passing just makes things absurdly easy for the opponents.
Please let me know about any questions or interest or bug reports about GIB.

We agree.

I play that Mike and U2NT are basically two-way, in that they are rather or quite weak, or very strong. Intermediate hands are bid by overcalling one suit and then hopefully bidding the 2nd suit next turn.

Anyhow, this 5062 hand is a clear Mike 2 bid for me at MPs and honestly likely at IMP (definately if NV vs V).

By bidding we hope PD fits and can put the opps to the last guess and if not, we may still find a quick 5 sac and they may missguess whether to continue.

Just my style .. neilkaz ..

Now Mark is a far better bridge player than I, but I'd like the same bid at IMPs as long as PD is aware I can be this weak (mine regulars are) and "6-5 come alive"

Justin, honestly I'd never consider anything that you've ever added to a thread here to be hijacking. We are all here to share experiences and learn.

To me, this is a Michaels bid. I would bid 2 with any partner unless we have a specific agreement not to bid Michaels on weak hands.

As the Blue Team taught us. Qxx is 2 3/4 losers unless pd has shown values.
That means this hand in this situation is a 7 1/2 loser hand. With 4 soft HCP.

Here They have Opened and we are in front of pd.
We have no idea how good or bad pd is for us, which means if we make a forward going call pd should "take us seriously".

Do you want to be taken seriously with this hand? I don't.

Pass. In tempo. You don't even have a legitimate hesitation.

There is no way that Michaels or 1 Spade can be right on this hand. If I have an agreement, that 2 shows about 10 hcps, this hand does not qualify and it would be a heavy break of partnership discipline to bid it.
In your system, this is an autopass and even thinking an overbid.

Right after the hand is over, you better talk with your pd that you want to play Michaels different in the future, because the hot guys prefer to bid it with the right 4 HCPs and will bid natural with 10 HCPS and 5/5.
Kind Regards

Roland

HCP when talking about 2 suiters (unbalanced in general), is an evaluation method that becomes obsolete when your level grows.

You can see the difference from

Ax Qxxxx Jxxxx Q
x KJ10xx QJ9xxx x

Where the second has less HCP but will produce 2-3 tricks more (with bad breaks even more becasue you enjoy zero tricks from your long side suit) if you declare.

What it is more correct is to compare offensive strenght to a balanced hand.

For example I define in my partnership an overcall over a 3 level preemptive as 'strength equivalent to a 15-17 balanced'

I like sound michaels, but this is a winning hand for people with "weak/strong" or "any" agreements.

But I'd never pass, so 1 it is for me. And if you seem to be to too weak for your implied agreements, you shouldn't bid 2.
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

2H.

I never would expect 10HCP, just the
playing strength and 6-5 is enough.

I don't fancy a 1 overcall with this at all.

So it's either pass or 2.

I'm in the strong/weak gang when it comes to Michaels and Unusual 2NT. Bidding will work fine if partner's got a fit and we either have the highest contract (then passing also works), can preempt opps bidding so they don't find their top spot or we find a good save.

Bidding is bad most of the time we end up defending the normal contract, as declarer soon will know our exact distribution and "guess" anything in sight.

So this comes down to what you perceive as the most likely outcome. I'm a passer here - I think that's a long time winner.
Kind regards,
Harald

2H, any scoring. WTP? We have no strength agreement and I have no strength.

What danger am I in? If you pass now, do you expect to come in later at a higher level? Are you going let the opps with their likely combined 28 HCP find their difficult to bid slam?
It costs nothing to be nice -- my better half
