It's the last board of a long and happy tournament. You are playing a 20 VP swiss teams event with a competent partner, and your teammates are an internationalist and his client. Though you do not yet know it, this lead means the difference between placing in the overalls three times in succession, or missing the leaderboard by one victory point.

Scoring: IMP

The auction:
Pass Pass 1 2
2 3 4 All Pass

Anything could be right but partner has presumably denied a good raise so I'd lead the A to look at dummy.

I don't lose too much sleep about getting these wrong, there are always other boards where I have made more significant errors!

We are V vs NV, so I can place K in my partner's hand. Question is: is this the right lead? We have several possibilities: partner has a decent holding which has to be played by his side, so we need to get him on lead. We can also have partner with doubleton and trumps control, or singleton and trump control. Here we need pace...

I'll lead small , indicating something in . Partner will do what's right. I just hope I didn't destroy our communications...

First thought was to lead the A. But I could not see where this trick would go without strange distribution in the minors as well.

I always seem to pick the wrong time to lead Ace from Axxx, so that leaves me with a diamond.

I'll go out on a limb and lead the club 9.
Is the word "pass" not in your vocabulary?

A. All leads are dangerous. Only costs if K is on my right.

Minor suit leads can cost in many ways.

Two-part question: What would you lead if partner passed throughout?

The revised auction is
Pass Pass 1 2
2 Pass 4 All Pass

Full hand was something like

Only a non-jack diamond lead beats the hand.

Now the Ace of heart is out
and the same is true for clubs,
which means a low diamond.
