17 HCP + 2 length points = 19 playing points.

This a GF hand opposite =any= Response.

Pard's 1N bid in competition shows ~ the top half of your minimum responding range.
Say ~8-10 instead of ~6-10.

Not only should you GF, but you rate to take 11 tricks most of the time.

3H

The hand is only worth an inv., at least for me,
1NT could still be 6-10, it simply shows a spade
stopper.
The hand is nice, if you had an 9 card heart fit,
but partner already denied primary heart fit.

Dunno why someone would force to game, the K and Q might very well be behind us, and we have a rubish suit. 2 may already be enough, but I won't try to mastermind and do the normal thing: invite.

I think you should force because the 1NT response usually shows 7-10 hcp, a better hand than the usual 5-10. Plus, it's usually done with a balanced hand, so no 6 hcp 55 minors in there.

HI Free,

and how right you are, lho holds xx, AQ, Qxx, KJT9xxx

and tried a semipsyche.... His pd lead a creative Club against 3 NT doubled and you are at least 4 down.

So, I won´t try to mastermind and force to game with 17+ ~9 HCPS.

Yes I would prefer a better suit and/or better spade spots. But Then I would look for slam, not game.
Kind Regards

Roland

I have seen lots of 1NT answers on BBO, with something like
KQx x Jxxxx xxxx

so I just invite.

3NT pard could even have a decent 11 hcp and bid 1NT!
Pard made a freebid with 7hcp they pass.

I bid 2 here which should be clear with a strong balanced hand.

The identical hand and auction was posted a week ago by Mat. The only difference was the heart spot was the 8 instead of the 9.

I opted for 2N on the other thread, since I don't think the heart spot is especially material.

This is a hand on which one's style of 1N opening bid may be relevant. I frequently open 1N with a 5 card major with 14+ to 16 hcp (I upgrade the 5th card to make the hand fit my 15-17 range, and treat the 17 count as 18).

Thus, when I make my 2N bid over partner's 1N, I come close to describing this hand: with a poor 14 or less, I would pass 1N (or bid 2 of a suit), and with 18 or more I would not let him out short of game. So I strongly suggest this type of hand. While the 6th is implied (and not strongly), rather than assured, it will come as no surprise to him that I have an extra card in a weak suit.

This hand should be downgraded because of the weak suit and the bulky minors: you rate to have real communication problems on this hand.

Now, give me the same shape with, say, xx AKxxxx KJx AQ and it is an entirely different hand even tho we have the same number of Aces, Kings, Queens and Jacks and precisely the same shape. With this hand, I would not let him out short of game: now I would try 2 to get some kind of descriptive call: 2N would promise good , allowing 3N by me, while I would bid 3 (forcing) over 3 minor and 4 over 3.

BTW, this approach is also based on my preference for heavy invites and aggressive acceptances: thus my 2N will get us to game unless partner has a minimum. If 2N would be treated as asking for a maximum, I would rather force to game than invite. I view this posted hand as a heavy invite.

Mike your post is very good, 2NT seems right. If partner has just a single spade stopper and like Ax of hearts, if he is accepting he might bid 3 anyway.

If I thought this was worth a game force I would bid 2 followed by 4 over 3, or 3NT over anything else.
Please let me know about any questions or interest or bug reports about GIB.

 OK, OK I did kidnap your thread, but only because I love it. The responses to your original post never really addressed the question I asked. The new answer to the original question seems to be 2 if you like the hand enough to force to game, and 3 if you deem it invitational. You can put me down for the latter.
