What will you do now? Double? Bid 3D? Pass? Bid 3C? Bid 3H? Seems about the only 2 calls available that don't endplay partner into a forced 3N are double and 3C. And do you really want to force partner to bid 3N on Kx of hearts?

3♦ is a gross overbid, but I am red at imps and I want partner to play 3N if it is biddable: why should he hold Kx rather than Ax or Kxx (both are good for a tempo) or Axx...?
Of course, when the worst bid one can hear is a raise..... poor partner looking at KQx Jx Axx Kxxxx: bids 4♦... now what??? Is this passable... ie should he always bid 3♥ (or splinter with 4♥) with gf raises, pulling 3N to 4♦ with a big hand?
I bet that in the BW MSC, double would get the most votes, but I really don't like it.
So I make the gross overbid: 3♦
BTW, a great advertisement for playing weak 1N in 1st and 2nd red: I do in one partnership, and it would be a relief to know that partner was not 11-14 balanced

I'd rather he could have a weak NT this time, and not have to wonder if he has a strong NT when I am dealt a similar hand two or three points weaker...

Time for the rest of the story - this was partner's hand and 8 tricks at NT is the maximum. At the table, I made a negative doulbe, not liking it a lot but liking 3D even less, and LHO raised to 3H and passed back to me - it sounded to me as if partner was most likely to hold a 3235 pattern with 12-ish and we didn't rate to have game our way so I elected to simply pass and try to go plus. Turns out we lost a couple of imps as our partners defended 3N for plus 100.
In retrospect, I really think the best bid on this hand is the 3 club underbid - this is most likely to get partner excited with the right hand and as Eddie Kantar used to preach to Billy Eisenberg, "When they preempt I don't have short clubs!".

winstonm, i think we will sign off 3♣ when you raise 3♣ by underbid, unless opps help us.

True - but with Kxx, Kx, xxx, AKxxx there are still only 8 tricks and now 3H doesn't make.

Pass, why bid if partner opens lightish.
3H if partner opens sound.

The Bridge World is a print magazine, you have to subscribe to it. It's well worth it, it is THE bridge magazine on this planet. I learned a lot from reading it, and half only been doing so for less than a year. There is still a special offer in the lobby news of BBO, I think. On their website, they have only a couple of samplers. (www.bridgeworld.com)
