How do you like the bidding? (gentle pls, both north and south are sensitive young men :lol: )

West leads the ace of diamonds, and shifts to the king of clubs. East-west are fairly inexperienced bridge players without agreements. How do you play the contract?
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

Great Hand Han. Very tough at the table.

1) Do we assume something around 7 whcp per Lawrence or
2) FTL 13-3 +(if we assume 25 working hcp then) plus 2=12 tricks?

I would just blast to 6s over 3s but you got there in your methods.

I like 3 Spade and 4 Heart.

My first Idea was that north has an obvious pass at his next turn. But he was right to bid on with his fit and the single. I had prefered 5 Diamond, showing a control in my book. I dislike RKCB from such a poor hand.
Anyway, the contract is fine.

I would draw te ace and King of of H, then the ace of spade. Then I reach the dummy with the 9 of H to the Queen and finesse to the Jack of spade. I clear spade and later pitch my loosing club.
Seems to win, with any spades 3-1 with east, and 2-2 or 1-3 East and the queen with East.

If something strange happens during the play, f.e. a Heart Chicane somewhere, I will think again, but mainly follow the same line.

Looks like the best chances to me....

Bidding:

Over 3S, I would bid 4D with the south hand with the intent of raising spades. To me a 4H bid does not show a hand with spade support, it's something more along the lines of KJx AQxxx x AKxx or Axx AQxxxx x AKx, basically a flexible hand without 4 card spade support. Given that I would pass 4H on the actual auction with the north hand. Had south bid 4D, north can bid 4H and south can try blackwood then 6H to suggest playing hearts.

Play:

I cannot imagine playing west for the SQ. I would play AK of hearts to test the break. As long as west had 1 or more heart, I would play east for the SQ (after checking on stiff Q of spades, unless west started with all 3 hearts).

I agree with Justin's bidding comments.

You can improve your chances slightly by cashing the spade ace before taking the second heart. You can then make it if west has exactly 1 heart and 0 spades, which was the case at the table.

I was torn on this hand whether to simply agree spades with 5♦ or introduce my 6 card heart suit. I believe that doubling and then bidding 4♥ should show a hand of about this playing strength. The spade fit of course reevaluates the hand.

I know how I would play the hand, but since LHO never really showed his 75 hand (wouldn't everyone have bid at least 4♣ after the X) and RHO has not flinched with his 4 card diamond support, I would not think to play LHO for 1 card in the majors.
