Scoring: XIMP

(P) - P - (1♣) - 1♥
(X) - XX - (2♦) - ?

LHO's double was the usual negative one.

Partner's redouble showed Ax or Kx of hearts (by agreement).

RHO's 2♦ did not show any extra values.

What do you bid now?

If you dislike the 1♥, what else would you bid? If you dislike the meaning of XX, what else would you have it mean?

I'd double for takeout and see what CHO does. I'll pass 2♥ and bid 2NT over 2♠.

Paul

BTW, I think this is a Rosenkrantz Redouble rather than a support redouble (which shows 3-card support).

Pass. I see no reason to bid. My "suit" is not much of one and I know we don't have an 8 card fit, RHO has bid my second suit, LHO has shown spades, and they are currently in diamonds where i have excellent prospects on defense. Where am I going?

Hard to see how opp's 2D bid doesn't show any "extras". Based on your C holding, pard rates to have S and D to go along with his HK. Based on your hcp I like 2NT, but if your pard can make his bid on 4 hcp and opp has a real 16+ hcp reverse.....(he could have passed and let his pard bid) perhaps pass is the best.

Pass for now.

I expect this to end the auction, since LHO can hardly be about to correct to ♣ and partner will not be bidding 2♥ when he has already shown his support and he probably has 3 or 4 ♦. Game is an awful long way away, and probably unbiddable and unmakeable if partner has a pass of 2♦.

So I will sit back and take my probable plus: I even have an easy lead

Pass, you can expect partner to bid 2H,
if he holds 3 card support.
The XX, assuming it is Rossenkranz, does
not deny Hxx.

Double for penalty. ;)

Yeah I know a lot of people play doubles in all auctions are takeout, but a takeout double here seems weird. If double is takeout, then for which suit(s)? RHO has bid two suits. LHO has shown a third. I should already know whether we have a heart fit (partner has shown two). I don't believe in "takeout" doubles when four suits have been bid!

So double here is either penalty or, if you have a real hatred of penalty doubles, then "cards." In either case double must be a reasonable choice.

A penalty double with only 2 trumps at the 2-level, yuck!

I would double unless we play this as a penalty double.

I vote for creating a new type of double, the "I'm frustrated at the state of the auction so I'm going to double and see what happens eventually. I propose the name "See what Happens In Time" Double. Should at least be popular with the forum crowd....lol

Peter, in what way is that double different from a card showing double?

Would anyone have considered overcalling a natural 1NT with Qxxxx in hearts ?

Yes, 1NT would have been my choice. Seems the most descriptive bid available. No need to go screaming about hearts.

1N is ok, but in my experience 5422s will very often play better in a suit, so 1H is ok too. If one of my clubs was in a pointed suit I would bid 1N for sure.

Justin, I can see that when deciding to OPEN a hand 1NT.

But do you think having the 4 bagger in OPPS suit makes also the hand best suited for a suit contract ?

Well, we still have 2 clubs for partner to ruff if we're in a 5-3 fit, and we still have 2 doubletons if we need to cross ruff/dummy reversal the hand.

I care about the friends I have made on BBO. Also, I am extremely concerned about the environment/ ecology/ wildlife/ the little planet that we call Earth. How much more of the world's habitat and food supply for animals do we plan on destroying. How many more wetlands are we going to drain, fill, and build on? How many more sand dunes are we going to knock down in the interests of high-rise hotels or luxury homes?

Would give a 1NT bid serious consideration. P usually has an easier time bidding in response to a limited, descriptive bid, and 1NT takes the pressure off the overcaller for the second round. Suppose partner responds 1S to your 1H bid. Your rebid is...................?

BTW: re 5422 usually playing better in a suit. Seems to me that I recently saw some hands with 15-17 hcp and 4-5 in majors opened 1NT on viewgraph on several occasions. Very Interesting.
