When you looked at this hand you thought you might be having to bid 4♠ next, when plans suddenly changed. Do you go for blood at the 1 level or retreat quietly to 2♣?
Time for blood?

I need a much better spade suit than this to leave the double in.

If I knew pard was going to do that, I would definitely think of passing. As it is, I think the hint is not strong enough to put me away from the normal 2♣ rebid.

Just a question on what is supposed to be "standard" hcp requirement for a neg double.
I know it sems std to require only 6+ hcp for a negative double, *when partner can take it out at the 1 level*, e.g.
1m-(1D/1H)-dbl.
But is seems to me some books require 6+ hcp *if opener has 1level rebid available*, 8+ hcp *if he has only a 2+ level rebid* available.
In other words, according to such a criterion, 1m-(1S)- dbl would require 8+ because opener (except 1NT) is much more likly to have to bid at the 2 level.
What is the "standard" ?

I throw the dice ....
I dont have lots of defence
against 1S, so 2C is a lot better
than passing, but ....
I hope, I get it right, even if it
may be wrong.
It would be great to know, if we are playing
negative free bids (I do) or not, in which case
the chance increases, that partner holds a good
hand.
With kind regards

passing and them making usually isnt a major disaster unless they redouble or make a bunch of overtricks....but still bidding 2♣

Are you opening 1♠ or do you mean you will open it playing some other system? I was a bit limited by playing with not quite a pickup partner, but an unfamiliar one.

1♣ - (1♠) - X - All Pass
Well, I decided to go for blood. I knew it was a gamble and that teammates would understand. Partner started with ♣K and another and we managed to set it 1. Most of the scores on the traveller were 2♣ off 1. I know. A bit lucky on this hand. I felt the decision was marginal at the time and it seems that the rest of you disagree. I.e. that the decision isn't close, but rather obvious for 2♣. Thanks for the input.
