Scoring: IMP

1♣ - (1♠) - X - (P)
?

When you looked at this hand you thought you might be having to bid 4♠ next, when plans suddenly changed. Do you go for blood at the 1 level or retreat quietly to 2♣?

I would bid 2C, my spades just aren't good enough to pass a neg X at the 1 level. I may check it out at MP only at this vulnerability.

2C - especially since you are in front of the 1S bidder and partner is likely to lead a spade.

I don't agree partner is likely to lead a spade, presumably if you pass you are 5-6 so partner will try to get a tap going.

There is nothing that suggests that you can defeat 1♠ just because partner has 6 hcp and 4+ hearts. A negative double is a take-out double. Take it out, bid 2♣.

I need a much better spade suit than this to leave the double in.

2♣: what is there about this hand to suggest that we can take 7 tricks against 1♠? Maybe we can, but it is too low a percentage for me.

One thing I considered is that although it is difficult to defeat a 1-level contract under the bidder, you are not risking a whole lot of imps here as 1♠X is not game. You are unlikely to have game yourself either. Just a thought.

There is one slight hint at passing. Pard may very well have a red 55 or 64 with around 6-8 hcp. In this case he's probably going to take out my 2♣ bid into some red suit and I'm not going to like that.

If I knew pard was going to do that, I would definitely think of passing. As it is, I think the hint is not strong enough to put me away from the normal 2♣ rebid.

Just a question on what is supposed to be "standard" hcp requirement for a neg double.

I know it sems std to require only 6+ hcp for a negative double, *when partner can take it out at the 1 level*, e.g.
1m-(1D/1H)-dbl.

But is seems to me some books require 6+ hcp *if opener has 1level rebid available*, 8+ hcp *if he has only a 2+ level rebid* available.

In other words, according to such a criterion, 1m-(1S)- dbl would require 8+ because opener (except 1NT) is much more likly to have to bid at the 2 level.

What is the "standard" ? ;)

Hi,

I throw the dice ....

I dont have lots of defence
against 1S, so 2C is a lot better
than passing, but ....

I hope, I get it right, even if it
may be wrong.

It would be great to know, if we are playing
negative free bids (I do) or not, in which case
the chance increases, that partner holds a good
hand.

With kind regards
Marlowe

They probably have a red suit fit (since you probably have a C fit) and when they run (if they do) you have misled your pard into thinking that you have a nice hand. 2C, Word.

tough question dont like my spade spots and dont like my position.
passing and them making usually isnt a major disaster unless they redouble or make a bunch of overtricks....but still bidding 2♣ ;)

If you go minus 180 vs your 110, that is pretty substantial. If you go -380 that is very bad, and is also not highly unlikely.

Are you opening 1♠ or do you mean you will open it playing some other system? I was a bit limited by playing with not quite a pickup partner, but an unfamiliar one.

Knowing fluffy I'm pretty sure he means he'd open 1S.

Scoring: IMP

1♣ - (1♠) - X - All Pass

Well, I decided to go for blood. I knew it was a gamble and that teammates would understand. Partner started with ♣K and another and we managed to set it 1. Most of the scores on the traveller were 2♣ off 1. I know. A bit lucky on this hand. I felt the decision was marginal at the time and it seems that the rest of you disagree. I.e. that the decision isn't close, but rather obvious for 2♣. Thanks for the input.
