Scoring: IMP

RHO opens a strong (15-17) 1NT. Your system allows a natural 2S. Do you use it? Explain your justification for the action you chose.

I would use it. Too much likelihood of a double partscore swing if I don't. This can give them a hard time too, especially if they don't play neg Xs. Bidding over a strong NT isn't geared towards getting to game, so I'm not worried about getting overboard. Obviously I could go for a number but I think the number of times I will win 5 or so from bidding will outweigh that. Vul I'd probably pass, it's close.

I care about the friends I have made on BBO. Also, I am extremely concerned about the environment/ ecology/ wildlife/ the little planet that we call Earth. How much more of the world's habitat and food supply for animals do we plan on destroying. How many more wetlands are we going to drain, fill, and build on? How many more sand dunes are we going to knock down in the interests of high-rise hotels or luxury homes?

NVul: I would bid with this hand in a heartbeat given the 6-card suit. An important factor in this anser is the fact that we also happen to play transfer overcalls over 1NT which would mean that the P gets to misplay the hand. The advantage is that the lead would be coming from the NT hand. Disadvantage is that lho could dbl 2H to show hearts and the opps compete in hearts. (This is a wash if the opps are playing negXs, so...)

Vul: it is tempting. At imps caution might be prudent. At matchpoints i think it's worth the risk of +110 vs. +100 assuming beating 1NT 2 tricks. Who's to say that they're staying in 1NT? IMO, with spades, early action is often prudent because it will be more difficult for partner to take balancing action without many spades in his/her hand unless the hand is very shapely and/or strong.

2S at any vul and form of scoring.
What more do you want? A seventh spade?

Hi,

2S, why not?

kill space, i.e. destroy their system of responses after 1 NT
opening, prepare a cheap safe, fight for the part score.

With kind regards
Marlowe

PS: I give up on game, after they open a strong NT, at least
reaching the game in a scientific way.
With kind regards

I would always bid with this hand, most patnerships that play arent able to handle the interference especiallly like jlall says when they dont play negative doubles :P If that suit was the or suit i would bid 3!

2S at any vulnerability for me, I have exactly what partner expects: a good spade suit.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

When opps are NV I'd bid 2, when they're V I'd pass. Why? When they're V, they're more likely to end up in 3NT which I hope to defeat. When they're NV, chance is bigger they end up in a partscore, and I want them to end in the wrong one.

I'll usually take a call with a 6 card suit and an 8 count. With a 5 bagger one suiter (5332), I usually don't like to take a call.

Re: 2 suiters -

With a 5-5, I'll have an 8 count.

With a 5-4, a 10

With a 4-4, I don't like to get involved, unless I have a good reason - like the opps are NV, or I have a lot of extras.

As much as I am tempted by the preemption value of this suit, I must be getting cautious in my old age. This hand looks like a minus waiting to happen.

If pard has the cards to produce a good result, then 1NT is going down on a 4th best S lead. Even tho I would open this hand 2S any vul 1st or 2nd seat, once the 1NT is bid by the opps, my success based on their inability to assess their assets goes to hell in a handbasket. I will lose 7 tricks most days so when they find their double, plus 50 or even -120 starts to look very good.

I would bid 2, feeling glad I'm playing that as natural ;) Now the reasons:

1. There's a good chance the hand is a partscore and I have spades, so I must bid.
2. Messing up opps' auction a little bit.
