Hello All

Well!.... I was drafted in as a last minute replacement to face the mighty 'Just for Fun' team of Kleek, Mallucy, Dr Todd and Inquiry' ..in the elimination competition to meet the Polish Expert Team.
We were demolished... no swishing of tails or shinny razor teeth on view last night.

Congratulations to our opponents and good luck for the next round.

Some lessons learned.....

Be prepared:-
Know well the system you as a partnership are supposed to be playing.
Know the system the opponents are using and don't be frightened to ask about any strange bids.
Don't expect too much from a partnership thrown together in haste to compete adequately against polished accomplished expert players.
For me a wonderful but at times bewildering experience for my partner a most frustrating evening, for my opponents...well... I'm glad it was just for fun :-

Hi John,

As a university of florida graduate, I certainly hated the concept of roasted gators. It was fun play with you, and you show the right attitude... every defeat (and victory) is a chance to learn and improve your game. No doubt the just havn fun guys will get a chance to use some of your lessons as we prepare for the awesome Cauldron Team made up of well established, real world canadian team of champions...

I kibitzed two of their matches and they are playing extremely well.

Gators? Yummers...they taste like chicken! As a Golden Bear grad, I prefer more seafood and berries than basic meat products. :)
"Champions aren't made in gyms, champions are made from something they have deep inside them - a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have last-minute stamina, they have to be a little faster, they have to have the skill and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill. " - M. Ali

Just havn Fun went down to defeat at the hands of cauldron by a score of 43 to 38 over 24 boards. The bridge was, to say the least, interesting.

I will share some of the good, the bad, and the ugly with you in this thread. First lets start with the bizzare.... you hold a nice hand for a change....

A
AKQJT9

At our table the auction goes...

2C-2D (2D shows at least one trick)
2S-4S (4S shows 2 tricks in theory)
4N-5D (1 or 4 key cards)
6S-all pass

partner holds
KT8
765
J98753
4

Question, we lose 7 imps... how does that happen? Yes.. .funny things happen on this one. 4-1spade behind AQ, partner natually plays SPADEACEand spade to king. makes if 3-2 or if his rho has 4 to the jack. 6S-1. At the other table? Bidding goes... 1Club all pass.... arghhhh... We lose 7 imps on this board, and only lost the match by 5.

Here is another one. The next to last board or so... in what is clearly a nip and tuck match. Maybe you are slightly behind... you hold...

S-AT9842 H-4 D-KJ93 C-32

Bidding...
You RHO Pard LHO
2S 2N Pass 3N 2N=17-20
Pass Pass Pass

Partner leads the SPADE jack and this dummy appears. Dummy plays low (does not cover)... plan your defense.
