Would have never bid 2♣ on the first round of bidding

With this said and done, if you are going to bid 2♣, 2♥ seems best.
I need to find some way to get partner to bid NT...

Why did you respond 2 clubs?
With a newbie, avoid making cue bids as much as possible, make bids that they know and will understand even if there's a technically better bid.

I would just bid 3 diamonds now. P has lousy diamonds, hopefully will remember your cue bid, still won't know what you have, and might just muster up the 3NT bid that you are hoping for. If Partner passes, at least he/she will thank you for supporting his/her second suit. Don't make things more complicated than necessary with a new player. If you rebid 3C, odds are that P will pass. (and then politely or not so politely ask why you didn't raise diamonds?)

Excellent hand for Rubens advances, is it not? I assume 2C did not show Ds, so now I agree with Richard's 2H bid.

I don't like 2♣ in the first round of bidding.
I would bid 2♦ if the newbie overcalls with 8HCP, 3♦ if her overcalls are textbook 12+.
2♣ can't help. What would you bid over 2♠ rebid. 3♦? Why not bid it immediately?
Sorry, my english is not perfect :(

Indeed a great hand for Rubens advances.

It seems that we are not playing Rubens advances, and that a direct 2D or 2H would not have been forcing. Hence, 2C followed by 2H shows a strong hand with hearts, not quite what we have.

I voted 3C, as this is clearly forcing and will get partner tobid 3NT with a stopper. Just wondering though: would 3D be forcing?
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

Here we all are talking about Ruben Advances etc....its an interesting hand we are playing with a newbie, so normally i would have bid 3♣ to start with asking for club stopper. I could take the young Brad Moss way and just bid 3nt to start with and hope they dont find the right lead or just blast into 5♦.

At the table I cue bid 3♣ and no I didnt get to play a 2-1 but got to play a 2-2 fit ;)
With partner saying I dont understand your bidding.

Oh you got to love those Indies ;)

A more basic question.

Does a newbie know or play that a cue bid suggests support for their suit (limit raise or better)? I wouldn't bet on it.
Or is a cue bid just a strong, forcing hand to them? Cue bids are EXTREMELY advanced bids to newbies. (Remember the last time your partner didn't interpret your splinter bid?) Repeat the cue bid with a total stranger/ newbie and you'll get the result you deserve. Partner will think you really have clubs: after all, you did bid them twice!!!

Playing with a newbie I believe the 2♣ Q bid could be misinterpreted - so I would have bid 2♦ and NOW I would not be in this position :(

Even with a 'pickup' advanced partner Q bids are open to agreement and without prior discussion (general strength or agree partner's suit? in the example shown) can also be misinterpreted ;)

Can't see a reasonable bid that will tell a newbie what I have in my hand ;) but will bid 3♦ now and MORE diamonds if opps are silent and P bids on B)

so maybe if partner will have no idea about cue bids, then maybe we should just close our eyes and bid 3nt. Which alot of people do . Heck if partner has good spades maybe even four spades is the correct contract playing a 5-1or 6-1 fit :)
